Live boot from USB is fine, after install, only boots to terminal

Post by mjfeeney »

I have been running Mint on this box for at least 5 years now and have never had an issue. I was running 19 for a long time, and never upgraded to 20. I just decided to move to 21 yesterday. I created my boot usb, and it runs perfectly fine live off the usb. After I was satisfied with how it was running, I clicked the Install Linux Mint icon, and it installed normally like it always does. After reboot, however, it only boots up to a terminal window, It won't accept the startx command, and it never asks me for a login. I'm not sure what to do with it at this point. I am running on the USB drive again, and I have pasted a copy of the inxi -Fxzd output below. Any advice appreciated!

UPDATE
I deleted my 2 drive RAID 0 and installed to a single drive bypassing the RAID, and it works fine. Any ideas on how to get it to boot from a RAID 0? It used to work just fine on Mint 19

Welcome to the forum, mjfeeney.

Both LM20 versions and LM21 have a "bug" in the installer which creates an efi partition even for computers without UEFI like yours. The way to work around that happening is to create your partitions ahead of time and then select the "Something Else" option during install.

I do not know how that "bug" might manifest itself in a RAID where someone does an erase and install. Did you do an erase and install or a "Something Else" when you did it the first time?

Also, check the output of inxi -Px on your installed version of LM21 to see if an efi partition shows up.

Linux Mint installer bugs happen in the same way on RAID volumesbut there is another problem in case of hardware RAID affecting users (including me). Linux Mint 21 Live (neither on Ubuntu 22.04, I have tried it) does not manage fake RAID as it used to(*) . See this post workaround.

You need to explain a bit. What do you mean with installed normaly? Please answer SMG's questions. What option did/do you choose (Erase all and install, Something else...)?

We need to make something else (see link workaround above) in order we can access RAID volume partitions to be mounted or removed. Maybe you were able to create new partition table on RAID volume (*). A per bug SMG already mentioned, installer will create a GPT partitioning scheme and install on UEFI mode on certain circumtances. Maybe that UEFI installation was fine and the problem was trying to boot on BIOS mode. Now we'll never know because you installed a second time on single drive.

If you are trying to install on RAID array from cratch again change computer setting accordingly and try to create new partition table on RAID volumen (MBR/dos) with gparted and create partition before trying to install with Something else....

If you can not create partitions with Gparted on RAID volume or mount them once they are created, apply that workaround.

-------------------------------------------------
(*)I want to keep Windows and LM 20 intalled, only will upgrade LM 19. 1 to LM21 on future. Obviously I did not tried to create new partion table on installing with Something else option or tried to install with Erase all and install Mint option, but installed on UEFI mode on another drive and Installer, because another known bug, was trying to access to UEFI partition on RAID to place loader on it and fails.

Neither I could remove flags on RAID EFI partition to install loader on that other drive EFI partition. I decided to use another Linux MInt 20.3 Live USB, but applying that kpartx workaround I would able to remove flag/reflag.
Arrieritos semos y en el camino nos encontraremos.
