Dual Boot, Windows 10 partition doesn't work anymore

Post by neozero »

Hello everybody,

I have installed Linux Mint on my laptop computer (see spec below) with Lili (https://www.linuxliveusb.com/fr/home) but after that Windows 10 wasn't starting anymore.
At first Linux Mint wasn't working properly also, I had to do few things to make it work (as you can see on the following topic that I created: viewtopic.php?p=2209041)
I have used Lili in the past to dual boot my computers with success. Since few years it's not developed anymore (which might be the cause of the boot failure).

So I have tried many thing to make Windows 10 start without any success. I have tried safe mode, I tried all the choice given in the start up menu, but none seems to work. The computer doesn't boot. It try to repair Windows 10 but that doesn't work.

To make thing worse I didn't made any save of my hard disk prior to Linux Mint installation. I was thinking it will be an easy installation without any problem, I was dead wrong.

How can I solve this ?

Thanks for your help.

Are you getting a grub menu on booting up?
Computer: Dell Vostro 470
Systems: Linux Mint 21.2 Xfce (Victoria), Manjaro 23.1 Xfce (Vulcan), Windows 10 (22H2) Pro.

Get into computer setup (F2?) to check current settings: boot mode UEFI (only), Secure boot (or whatever they call it) disabled and Fast/Quick boot disabled. If you have changed anything save change and exit (F10) to restart and get into computer setup again to see it is ok and check boot order to place ubuntu option first.

Then restart computer a check your computer boot menu (F12?) to find ubuntu and Windows options there.

You also would see a Windows entry on GRUB menu when choosing ubuntu option.

If you didn't see that ubuntu option anywhere or a Windows option on GRUB menu, on a working Linux Mint session or booting Linux Mint live USB, open a terminal (Alt+Ctrl+T) and run sudo update-grub and post back sudo os-prober result.

Also post back following codes result

Code: Select all

lsblk -f
mokutil --sb-state
sudo efibootmgr -v

I have done this part but that doesn't change much. I still got the windows 10 recovering operation but it fail.

If you can not boot Windows since you have installed LM, something you did on installing caused that problem, just think about it.

It looks like you have, at least, moved Windows partitions. Windows partitions use/need to be placed firsts on disk. This is what Windows repair expect to find but sda2 is an unknown Linux partition.

Post back sudo fdisk -l; sudo blkid to be sure partitions are in order or take a screenshot running Gparted (maybe you will need to install Gparted first, apt install gpated). Also you can explain what you did.

I don't remember what I did exactly but what I remember is that I installed Linux Mint using Lili (link in the first post), but when I tried to run LM it didn't work, I have done few other things to make it work (like changing UEFI mode), but before even doing that when I tried to run Windows it was not working.

Basically:
* I installed LM but was not able to run it without live mode (when I closed my computer everything vanished).
* I tried to restart Windows 10 in the mean time but it didn't work (I will post screenshot of what I got but it's something along the line of trying to repair Windows).
* I then was able to make LM work in "normal" mode doing few change.
* Windows 10 was still not working for me.

The result of the commands are:

It is not possible a Windows reserved partition (sda2) with Ext.4 filesystem. Post back following code results

Code: Select all

sudo parted -l
sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda
You can use gdisk (see man gdisk) from Linux Mint live terminal (sudo gdisk /dev/sda) to change sda2 type (t) to 0C01 and put in order partitions (s). Then try to boot/repair Windows.

You can use gdisk (see man gdisk) from Linux Mint live terminal (sudo gdisk /dev/sda) to change sda2 type (t) to 0C01 and put in order partitions (s). Then try to boot/repair Windows.
When I tried gdisk I got the following, it doesn't seems to have change anything, but I might be wrong:

Code: Select all

neo@neo-Lenovo-ideapad-330-15ARR:~$ sudo gdisk /dev/sda
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 1.0.5

Partition table scan:
  MBR: protective
  BSD: not present
  APM: not present
  GPT: present

Found valid GPT with protective MBR; using GPT.

Command (? for help): t
Partition number (1-5): 2
Current type is C01 (Microsoft reserved)
Hex code or GUID (L to show codes, Enter = C01):
Changed type of partition to 'Microsoft reserved'

Command (? for help): q
neo@neo-Lenovo-ideapad-330-15ARR:~$ sudo gdisk /dev/sda
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 1.0.5

Partition table scan:
  MBR: protective
  BSD: not present
  APM: not present
  GPT: present

Found valid GPT with protective MBR; using GPT.

Command (? for help): s
You may need to edit /etc/fstab and/or your boot loader configuration!

Command (? for help): q

I thought LiLi was not compatible with UEFI. I gave up using it for that reason 9 year ago, I'm sure it was not compatible then. I preffer Rufus in any case but Ballena Etcher also works on Windows.

I don't know how you end-up that partition filesystem but type is correct. I can not recommend change/convert that partition filesystem and I would try to solve windows boot first of all.

On previous post images, did you try Advanced options>Troubleshooting>Advanced options>Startup repair? Also you can find other methods to solve that problem.

If you need to reinstall Linux, be sure to disable hibernation/fast start-up on Windows and also, if you need to make room for Linux, shrink Windows partition with Windows disk manager before trying to install Mint.

I tried other methods given in the link but nothing seems to work. See picture below.

Also yeah I have tried start up repair but that doesn't work either. I really don't understand I have literally just installed Linux Mint with Lili.

+ I just remember now I have checked the case to encrypt the disk (on installation). Maybe there is something to do with that ?

It look like the codes your are running on Fix3 (so codes on Mini Tool Partiton wizard link) are wrong. Look at here.Codes using there for checking repairing fileystem are chkdsk C: /f /r .

Also you didn't try Fix 4. Disable Automatic Startup Repair

Looking for another cases many user decided to reinstall Windows as the only way to solve this problem. :(

Weirdly I didn't see your reply. I just saw it now.

I will try what you said. Do you think there is a way to save my data ? (example: copy my whole disk to another external disk ?).

Thanks for your help.

If you have not problems booting Linux Live USB and can mount partitions (at least with read permission), yes you would be able to save your data.
