Transition Linux Mint 17.3 to Mint 21 (with multiple users)?

Post by lotharjade »

I have Linux Mint 17.3 with multiple users, and I want to transition to the newest version of Mint (21). Can I just follow the installation guide that is provided for more recent transitioning to Mint 21, or are there added steps I will have to take?

If there are added steps, what I am looking at having to do?

Thanks.

Have you tried turning it off and on again, then hitting it repeatedly? :/

You have to do a fresh install after backing up your data which you can restore . There is no solution to update from 17 to 21
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.

+1.

there is no easy method, to upgrade by that amount.
:arrow:

you will need to Back-up everything of any value,
and take some notes, on the various user profiles, & user-names,
in order for you to re-create them again, on the New LinuxMint System.

In theory you could upgrade ...

1. from 17.3 ->18
2. from 18 -> 18.3
3. from 18.3 -> 19
4. from 19 -> 19.3
5. from 19.3 -> 20
6. from 20 -> 20.3
7. from 20.3 -> 21

In reality this will give so much trouble, that you would be able to do more than a dozen fresh installs in the same time, most likely 2 dozen. And after so many upgrades you can still not be sure, that all works as expected. So forget it.

BTW: You are 3 years late, taken from the time, when support for LM 17.x ended.

The first step must be - in any case - to backup the home for all accounts!

Are you sure there weren't bigger jumps than that for upgrading? Like right now, how far a jump is there to the current version?
