[SOLVED] Manually Install HP Printer to Use on More than One Wifi Network

Post by wmeler »

Posting this solution for others who have the following issue.

I would often automatically switch WiFi networks when I'd physically move. Problem was, when I was on the WiFi network of my HP printer, I could print... but when I'd auto-switch to another WiFi network, I couldn't.

To solve this, I re-installed the printer using HPLIP.

1) Follow https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... anguage=de
2) I manually installed a printer by using the GUI that eventually came up. I found the IP address of the printer at the printer itself. Then, used this:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ootNetwork
3) It says to issue this command, so I did:
$ hp-makeuri <ip-address> [changing the ip address as shown in example, like this: $ hp-makeuri 192.168.1.1 ]
4) I then copied JUST the bit it suggested that looks like this: hp:/net/Officejet_9100_series?ip=192.168.1.1
5) I did *not* do step 5.
6) Actually, not 100% sure steps 2-5 above are necessary. (Doing this from memory here.) Instead, I used the HP GUI to install the printer. Not sure if it needed the IP address (pretty sure it did) or the device URI found with steps 2-5 above.

Either way, this should make it possible to print whether or not you are on the correct WiFI network.
