Of course, at other steps note possible errors (mount and umount say nothing if successful) but ignore noise tar may during restore make as to ownership/permissions. Note that I'm off again.
OK got it, dosfstools....

Slightly worried that that "no complaint" thing would mean you did not restore to a FAT filesystem so just to be thorough... have you in the meantime rebooted and found such still possible?

Don't worry too much if you try and it bombs; can be fixed from a Live USB.

Rebooted and everything great, I checked with Gparted and no more yellow triangle, no more error.

I realize the thread has been solved. Still, I'm puzzled by one thing. What the heck is taking 75 MB of space in the EFI partition?

For comparison, here's what I get in a single OS virtual machine:

Code: Select all

user@vbox-cinn-21-1:~$ sudo du -hs /boot/efi
[sudo] password for user:
5.3M	/boot/efi
That's seven boot loaders, four in the /ubuntu folder and three in the backup /BOOT folder.

Leftovers from a Windows install, no doubt. I.e., that 96MiB FAT-filesystem once upon a time nicely filled a 100MB Windows-style ESP, which was then later enlarged but not reformatted. Don't have a UEFI Windows on hand to quickly compare but on its ESPs you find e.g. EFI/Microsoft/Boot/Fonts and Languages gunk.

To OP: you may feel free to not worry about it: it doesn't matter and I myself as such explicitly elected to not concern ourselves with it -- but if you now do worry, linux-rox will be available to help you clean...

Didn't think of that. Interestingly, when I check a Win7 VM, its EFI partition (100 MB) only has 24 MB used, while my Win10 dual boot has 71 MB used.
So, at a guess, the OP started with Win7 then upgraded to Win8 and/or Win10.

Agreed.

Of course.
