Boot/login screens flashing/not visible when second monitor unplugged

Post by Atari1030 »

Dell XPS 15 2-in-1 9575 with 4k touchscreen

I set up the laptop to dual boot between Windows 11, Linux Mint and Kali Linux. I did all of the setup with an external 4K monitor attached. Everything worked.

When I boot Linux Mint without the external monitor, the screen flashes solid white, black, half screen white, vertical colored lines, alternating. The flashing happens during the boot screen and continues for what should be the login screen. I can't see anything. No user interface visible, but I am able type in my password, hit enter and then the desktop is finally shown correctly. I think it's worth noting that the flashing on the screen becomes synced to my typing. More/extra garbage is displayed with each keystroke. I suspect all of the garbage flashed on the screen reflects an attempt to render the parts of the boot and login screens.

Thank you for any help you can provide. Very much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, Atari1030.

What happens if you boot to a live session of Linux Mint using an install usb without having the external monitor attached? Do you have the same response?

Are there any settings in the BIOS/UEFI related to having an external monitor attached?

Same result with no external monitor attached using a live session from an install USB. Screen flashes. If I choose the second option from the live USB marked “compatibility mode”, after a brief single flash of garbage on the screen (looks like a distorted/torn/garbled version of the Mint logo perhaps), I get a working graphical Mint desktop. I now recall I used that compatibility mode to do the Mint install.

I scoured the BIOS settings and didn’t seeing anything about an external monitor.

Thanks for your reply and sorry for the delay.

Try adding the i915.enable_psr=0 kernel parameter to grub. You can use the following information How to add a kernel parameter to temporarily or permanently add the parameter. When you add it temporarily, it adds it only for that current boot cycle, so if, for any reason, it seems to cause issues or it does not work, all you need to do is reboot to clear it. If you need more details than that topic provides, just let us know.

Please also make sure your install is upgraded. There has been an upgrade to the Mesa version for LM21 versions, but I don't recall if it happened before or after the time you posted inxi. It may have been after.
