[PROBLEM SOLVED, QUESTION CONCLUSIVELY ANSWERED.] Should I chose to boot from the BIOS or UEFI?

Post by lostsoul »

Shortly I am going to be building a new toy for myself. Reading the motherboard manual, it sounds like I can install Mint to boot from either the BIOS or UEFI.

Up to now my machines have all booted from the BIOS so UEFI is a new creature for me.

I am leaning to booting from UEFI simply because it is newer technology so theoretically better.

Are there any benefits, drawbacks, or other issues selecting booting from UEFI?

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Select UEFI. Only select BIOS if UEFI causes problems.

Disable secure boot, though, if enabled by default. Not very useful and can make some tasks more difficult, e.g., installing drivers.

Another vote for UEFI. UEFI-boot is much nicer than legacy boot, what with a well-defined place for boot-loaders such as Grub on the so-called ESP, a small FAT-formatted partition. In contrast legacy boot needs Grub split over MBR and "stolen space" between MBR and the first partition. It also (by design; Grub is in fact a bit too flexible there...) implies GPT-style partitioning rather than old MBR-style which is again much nicer, certainly if you want more than 4 partitions -- and needed if you want to partition more than 2T.

is this an dual_boot scenario ?
& what was the original operating system - if any ?

the modern method, is to run in an UEFI mode & an GPT partition system.
8)

you can still have an BIOS .. Legacy & ms-dos partition system
- with an 64 bit operating system . . this actually will work, okay.
:o

but, that hybrid method, is Not the correct method, these days.

Well the votes are all in favour of UEFI so that is how I will proceed. Thanks to all! :)

My build is on hold for a bit -- the store has sold out of the two AMD motherboards I was considering. So I am back to looking at features, reading reviews and specs. And then running like the wind to the store to get what I settle on.

TO PIERRE: this will be a single boot system -- only Mint. I gave up being annoyed by Windows years ago.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions and advice. It is much appreciated.
