Linux mint mate not booting to gui
i installed linux mint mate onto my old laptop yesterday and upon trying to log in this morning, it just loaded to the terminal and all the solutions online were not working, i attempted reinstalling lightdm and trying startx but both gave me an error, i have reinstalled it but i would like to know if there is a way to prevent this from happening again.

Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately as you've reinstalled Mint and (we assume) it is working, it is unlikely that you will find out what happened in your last install to cause the problem.
Obviously no one is going to guarantee what will happen in the future or what you can do to prevent a problem (which no one knows what it was) from happening again.

Prevention of the need to re-install: create a snapshot with Timeshift. Restore it in case of disaster (can even be done from within the live session after booting from the Mint USB stick).
