(solved ,sort of ) Clone zilla after successful restore mint 21.1 does not boot.
Hello,
System is Lenovo with 1 tb HDD. Came installed with Windows 10. Partitioned and divided so that there are 2 partitions of 435 gb each. Win and Mint. Mint restored successfully from a CZ backup of another system. After reboot there is no grub, Windows boots directly. In BIOS there is no entry of Ubuntu in boot menu. What is advised now please?

Re: Clone zilla after successful restore mint 21.1 does not boot.
It is strange preinstalled Windows only creates one partitiion. Also restoring Mint partition do not install grub loader (see here), this is something you need to do after restoring, before rebooting, in the same way as modifying /etc/fstab on restored Mint partition if it is needed.

Re: Clone zilla after successful restore mint 21.1 does not boot.
Do not mount EFI partition on Mint live /boot folder, you 'd better use an empty folder and you need to be sure /EFI/ubuntu folder is not empty in any case...
Also I don't know what are those sda5 and sda6 1MB ext.2 partitions. Maybe it is worth to remove them and start installing grub from scratch.
See chroot method for UEFI system on tutorial proposed on previous post. You need mount Mint root partition (sdb7?)
Then mount EFI partition on /mnt/boot/efi
Complete mounting , chroot and install grub
Unmount

Re: Clone zilla after successful restore mint 21.1 does not boot.
I created sda5 and sda6 because I needed to restore to sda7. My source was from sda7 and if I wanted to restore to a different partition,it would have been a Hassel. I didn't update-grub after grub-install. I will try it and report back other commands output asked by you shortly after an hour from now.

Re: Clone zilla after successful restore mint 21.1 does not boot.
I installed Mint 21.1 on the same laptop. This time there was an ubuntu entry in efibootmgr and in Bios. It is missing now in both BIOS and efibootmgr as is indicated above. Will again post back after 8 hours from now.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.

Then you don't need to reinstall grub just rundeepakdeshp wrote: ⤴Sat Feb 04, 2023 2:04 pm I installed Mint 21.1 on the same laptop. This time there was an ubuntu entry in efibootmgr and in Bios. sudo update-grub
from new Mint installation and see if restored one is detected. Also I noticed you were booting Linux Mint live 20.1 but that clone is from Mint 21.1...

Re: Clone zilla after successful restore mint 21.1 does not boot.
You can not update-grub on Linux Mint Live system, but on chroot system.
There was a couple of problems installing grub-efi on last try. It failed on installing grub-efi-amd64-signed and then failed (grub-install: warning: EFI variables cannot be set on this system). It is logical it can´t detect any system on Live USB because of hybrid boot but netiher detect Windows...
Be sure you are booting Linux MInt Live 21.1 on UEFI mode, then run Boot Repair (Menu>Administration>Boot Repair) and choose BootInfo summary option to share link when offered.

Are you still booting Linux Mint Live 20.1 USB? Did you connect to internet (it is needed a working internet connection)?

Re: Clone zilla after successful restore mint 21.1 does not boot.
The problem is sort of solved. I shrunk the Mint partition and installed Ubuntu server on the disk and it installed grub, boots and grub is visible.! But it is not a satisfactory solution. I have another laptop on which this can be tried. Using boot repairs etc. It's 2 am trying this out and I spent 5.30 hours. Jo-con-el. Your help is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Clone zilla after successful restore mint 21.1 does not boot.
I also have to reshuffle the boot order. Mint has to be first.
Ok I did that. Booted Mint and ran.
Now Mint is first in the boot order.

Re: (solved ,sort of ) Clone zilla after successful restore mint 21.1 does not boot.
For record purpose so that it may be useful for others.
Mint restore from clonezilla backup and to make it bootable I followed following process.
Shrink Windows partition by 500 GB by booting into Windows as the sda disk size is 1 TB.
Boot mint USB, create 12 gb swap,7gb ext4 partitions for Ubuntu server from the 500 gb unallocated partition. Create additional partitions from the 500 gb shrunk partition so that we have 489gb sda7 partition to restore Clonezilla backup.
Boot clonezilla USB,restore sda7 image to sda7 partition. Boot Ubuntu server and install in 7gb partition. Server was chosen as it's install size is small and it installs very quickly. Server install was needed as it installed grub and located Mint and Windows and made bootable entries .
Boot mint from sda7, comment out the additional partition numbers from the restored image from /etc/fstab from sda7 partition as these don't exist in the new system. Change your sda1 entry in fstab which is to be mounted on /boot/efi as the blkid is different. I used partition name /dev/sda1 instead of uuid in fstab.
Now mint boots to gui.
Mint is 3rd entry in grub hence grub-install /dev/sda,update-grub. This made it the first entry in grub.
Logout from gmail in the browser and remove thunderbird account after logging into mint from sda7. That completes the procedure to restore from Clonezilla sda7 to new disk with sda7. Restoring from CZ to a different partition is complicated hence the same sda 7 was created for restore on the new system.
