/dev/disk/by-uuid/#### not found, drops to a shell?

Post by recent-convert » Sun Feb 28, 2010 7:35 am

When I attempt to boot Helena KDE, it hangs and drops to a shell saying
"Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args...
- Missing modules...
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/#### Does not exist. Dropping to a shell!"
I've googled and found a few solutions to similar problems, but these haven't worked for me. I noticed when I ran a live cd and looked at it with partition editor that my mint and swap partitions no longer have mount points. Can anyone help
me understand what's going on and fix it? As it stands at current, I'm not even able to mount the partition from the live cd to retrieve my data.

I suppose you use grub2 (and you do, unless you have upgraded) and it's still new and unfamiliar
I've found what probably is the solution, but in a Catch 22 manner you need to boot to make it work
when I ran a live cd and looked at it with partition editor that my mint and swap partitions no longer have mount points
That's as it should and must be - the CD is read only now, but you should be able to mount the partition - just click on it in Dolphin
Can you do anything in the shell? If it asks for your root password that is the same as you "sudo password"
If you can use nano, edit etc/default/grub
Find the line
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true
and uncomment it (remove the #)
Then
update-grub
and you should be good to go
Reboot

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it
