Can't boot latest live DVD / Installer on Optiplex 740

Post by Underpants »

I've tried this with the installer DVD and a USB Drive I created with unetbootin. Both of them will load initrd and vmlinuz and get maybe 8 seconds into it; then the box reboots. It happens too fast for me to see the error. What can I do?

I have upgraded the bios to the latest rev....

GPU = GeForce 6150 LE

nomodset will be a absolute must.

I can tell ya now the kernel will not support it but drivers will.

Done a few of these with natty 11.04. I had to f6 and pick nomodset options for custom boot.

You will need to custom out the grub menu with nomodset to get her to boot.

Means dropping to recovery mode and command line.

OR easy fix is to drop in a little $30.00 budget modern PCI-E card.

I show it has a single PCI-E 16x slot .

I assume you mean "nomodeset" I did some searching for nomodeset and 6150le and found people with similar issues.

I pressed TAB at the installer screen to edit the grub line...

I changed the end of it to look like this;

Code: Select all

boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.lz nomodeset --
But it still reboots unexpectedly. Any more thoughts?

oops missed a E . Sorry.

Well, I know the kernel is the issue.

That dell was released in th end of 2007. Pushing that 4 year mark.

Might also try acpi = off as well.

All to often it fails out on acpi as well.

remember bud, Mint 11 is state of the art, quite literally.

Works great on systems in the last year or 2 for sure.

Some 3 and 4 year systems will struggle. Doable, with work.
