Mint 11 and EEPC 701

Post by Paul L »

I have an EEPC 701 (with 4GB SSD) and wanted to update to Mint 11. The install screen requires 4.4Gb for it to install and run so it won't fit. I noted that Ubuntu 11.04 has an alternate install that does away with the graphical install and allowed me to install and run it on the EEEPC. Personally I'm not a great fan of Unity but it fits onto my PC with approx 1Gb of hard disc left over for updates and additional programs.

Since Mint is based on Ubuntu, is there an alternate iso for Mint 11 available which would allow me to run it on my EEEPC?

Many thanks

Paul

As far as I understand Mint doesn't do alternate installer images.

While Mint 11 takes less than 4GB on the disk the installer requires more than that amount to install. You can use Mint 10 or you will need to move to Mint LXDE or some other Mint version that uses less disk space.

You can just use the advanced partitioning, and then create a 4GB / partition on the SSD. Then it just installs (but may show a warning about lacking disk space).

Note that you don't have swap space this way and so you won't able to hibernate Linux. But anyway, Ubuntu also does not have enough space for a swap.

I tried to install Mint 11 on a 4GB Eee 701 (actually is 3.7GB...) SSD and the installer doesn't unlock the forward button. I left Mint 10 there.

The CD version of Mint needs less space and may install without any problem using the advanced partitioning.

Yes, the CD version only needs 3,7GB and uses even less after install. Even after installing, upgrading and using the upgrade to DVD option it uses only 3.3GB.

Mint 10 LXDE uses only 2.2GB after install and upgrade.

Taking a lightweigt edition may be a good choice on a netbook, though there are many netbooks that can run a normal edition fine.
