Is THIS normal? Live CD Boot freeze / loop in a Toshiba A60

Post by isaare »

Hi to all,

I've successfully installed two Katyas this week in two different computers at home, and I wanted to install a third one, getting this odd result (strange never-ending loop) when trying to boot from live mode:

http://youtu.be/YBrNex2i_JE

I've tried to boot it in the same notebook from VirtualBox and it gets somehow "stuck" at the "READY..." stage... and never finishes booting.

The CD is OK as it's the same one used to boot and install my other two PCs.

Model is Toshiba A60 "Campus" (Celeron D), currently running Ubuntu LTS and WXP (both fully functional).

Any ideas??

Anyway, if it's impossible to boot Mint 11... is there any way to "upgrade" Ubuntu LTS to Linux Mint 11??

Thanks in advance!

I would try nomodeset and acpi=off

Look for the option to custom the boot options via live menu.

Yes she is, but as I said, it's running Ubuntu 10 Lucid LTS (Gnome, XFCE, LXDE, etc; only kde 4 results too heavy for her), so why can't I even boot Mint??

By the way... I can't boot Mint LXDE either...

Hmm I CAN boot Debian Edition.
However it's Mint 10.

Thanks

Same problem here on an A60 Satellite Pro. Sysinfo tells me its running a 2.8Ghz Celeron - seriously, I think thats a mistake - and 702mb RAM, which is presumably 768 minus a chunk for graphics. I've got Mint 10 and Ubuntu 10.04 installed at the moment, but I get this same loop trying to run either Mint 11 or Ubuntu 11.04.

I've also had a shot at Fedora 15, which loaded OK as a live disc, but in "fallback" mode, without Gnome 3. Kinda leads me to suspect that Unity/Gnome 3 is the problem, but I don't know nearly enough to be sure.

Any ideas / suggestions gratefully received...

Toshiba + Linux has always been problematic. There are models that work well, and often it works with compatibility mode: press a key at 'Automatic boot in 10 seconds' and then choose compatibility mode with the arrow keys and press Enter. But I think you have already tried that.

Probably Mint 10 will be able to boot on the A60, the 2.6.38 kernel still contains some bugs.

Thanks Albert - unfortunately using compatibility mode does not work either :(

Guess I may have to wait a little longer.

Of course compatibility mode didn't work when I tried. :?

At this point, I've installed Mint 10 Debian Edition.
What should I do to upgrade it to Mint 11? Upgrade manager says "there are broken packages, fix them first"... (¿?)

Hi Isaare,

How did you do that? On my setup the update manager wil only update the current version, rather than upgrade to a new version. I seem to remember being able to change this way back in Ubuntu 8.04 (before I switched to Mint), but I can not figure it out in Mint :/

TIA

I...

1) Installed Linux Mint Debian Edition (10) from Live CD to HD.
2) Restarted to check everything booted OK
3) Opened Terminal and copy-pasted this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Although maybe it could have been better with:

Code: Select all

sudo sh -c "apt-get update;apt-get dist-upgrade;apt-get autoremove;apt-get autoclean"
(Because I've read this stops shell asking for passwords in such a long proccess...)

It took long but worked! :D

The Debian edition, which you named 10, does not have a version number.

They just updated the Mint 9 wallpaper of Mint Debian to the Mint 10 wallpaper. And sooner or later the Mint 11 wallpaper (with the 11 replaced by the Debian logo) will appear. Debian is rolling so it's always the latest version.
