LM11 RAID Support = NO??

Post by psykotik »

Hello. First off, I have googled just about 6 hours of useless articles before i decided to make this post...

It seems like I have to be just about the ONLY person in the linux community using REAL LIFE ON-BOARD HARDWARE RAID(some keywords for future googlers)....

Anyway. I have a RAID 0 ARRAY on 4x160GIG drives. LM11 Installs just fine on it...
but once it reaches completion(installation of grub).
it complains about not being able to install grub to /dev/sda(of course because its now /dev/mapper/bunchajibberish).
I select to have it installed in (/dev/mapper/bunchajibberish or bunchajibberish1)
either way no matter where its installed too. when i reboot. the computer does the normal.
It does the POST yada yada yippy.
Then it gets to the point where usually you see things happen like perhaps "WIndows Logo" appears
or some sort of Bootloader should be appearing. But in my case, at that point it just sits there
at a black screen... with a lonely blinking cursor... and blinks till i shut the system off...
This is the first time Ive ever had a problem with RAID and installing an Operating System.
But now im kinda just screwed. because Im using a live usb stick. of Lm11 to post this.
No other means of installation. SAVE ME. I BEG YOU! I have beer.

Oh yes, and when i boot from live. and select boot from locate drive.
it boots me into busybox and says try init= bootargs...

I could be wrong here but I always thought real hardware RAID presented the drives as 1 drive to the OS, so it shouldn't be /dev/mapper/anything but actually /dev/sdX?

You sure you're not on FakeRAID (IE built into motherboard BIOS)? Have you tried creating a boot partition (100Mb or so)?

Doesn't answer your question, but I think that does need clarifying for future replies :)

Well since you put it that way, yes its built in to BIOS. No i havent created a boot partition.

You can also get rid of the BIOS' RAID option and use this tutorial: http://www.howtoforge.com/install-ubunt ... re-raid-10
It is made for RAID 10 but should also apply to other RAID variants (0, 1, 5, etc.). It should be clear what needs to be changed to get software RAID.

RAID using BIOS often works 100% fine. LM supports it - but there also has to be good Linux support for the motherboard and its RAID controller. I've seen some people on the forum who did not have any problem with BIOS RAID.
