can't boot from usbstick

Post by cbrace »

Hi all,

I would like to install Mint on a notebook without an optical drive. I have downloaded the 64-bit ISO and tried creating a bootable usbstick with both unetbootin and liveusb-creator under Fedora 14. Each time, the OS appears to be successfully copied to the 4 GB usbstick, but in neither case have I been able to boot the notebook from the usbstick; the screen simply remains blank.

Any ideas on what might be going wrong here?

Thanks

At what point in the boot process does the screen go blank?

I see the BIOS splash screen and then nothing... just a cursor. As far as I can tell, the boot process hasn't even started.

Try the usbstick in another computer, if working or not.
Do you change boot priority in BIOS :?:
in some newer BIOS you must select your usbstick in Harddisk priority

BIOS cannot find the correct boot loader. Try format your usbstick with FAT32.

Formatting the usbstick as FAT32 did the trick (it was formatted in EXT2).

Now installing...

Thanks!

Before I restart my computer right now (I'm having terrible trouble establishing an internet connection on Ubuntu).

To upload LMDE onto a USB flash drive all I need to do is:

1. Download the correct ISO from LinuxMint.com.
2. Use gpartition to format my USB.
3. To format all I did was select new and partition all the free space onto the 8gb USB. Originally I had it on ex2, and also tried ex4, they both didnt work. So now I will try Fat32
4. Use UNetbootin. Tick the bottom where I find my ISO.
5. Unplug the USB, plug it back in, mount it.
6. Upload on USB
7. Reboot

Pretty much this is not working. I'm sure it has to do with somewhere around Gparted I am missing. Anyone can advise?

Hello,
I have created live-cd for Mint 12 GNOME3 (32-bit) from the Image and it works. Afterwards, I created USB-stick from the same image, but it doesn't work.
It boots, but afterwards it writes "vesamenu.c32: not a COM32R image boot".
What's the problem? Thanks

@jajajam, do you create usb installer with mint startup disk creator :?:
If you create with startup disk creator, you can try type : live
or go to usb drive , open syslinux directory, edit syslinux.cfg .
change in line :

default vesamenu32

to

default live

Thanks for helping.

Yes, i did so. And I did as you've told me - I have changed ''default vesamenu.c32'' to ''default live'' in syslinux.cfg file in syslinux directory. And now it works. Again many thanks.
The only thing, that I didn't understood, why it didn't worked, when I have created by the startup disk creator???

i don't know the answer for that, but maybe :
mint startup disk creator base on ubuntu version , if you booting from ubuntu live cd , it will give a menu in vesa 32 bit to choose try ubuntu or install ubuntu . But in Mint live CD you will straight to desktop. ( this is just my opinion) :D
