Can't install ppa via terminal

Post by perdomot »

Been trying to install some software by adding a couple of ppa via the terminal as usual and after I type in my password, the terminal just hangs. When I close the terminal it mentions a process is running so I know something happened but don't know why this is going on. Anyone heard of this before? Thanks.

Terminal hangs after I type in my password. I tried adding the ppa in the Software Sources app and it again hangs. Its like the system refuses to add ppa.

UPDATE:
This is getting weird. I booted Ubuntu Mate off a USB drive and I had the same problem. Used my 2nd PC and it happens there so its not a hardware issue. Can't add a repo and the system just hangs. I tried restoring to the default repos and problem persists. I can use the repos I've already installed to add or remove stuff like icons but I just tried to add a repo for icons I've used before and the system hangs again. I've tried repos from different sources like webupd8 and the same thing happens. Anybody else experiencing this?

Hi perdomot,

It would certainly help if you told us what software and what PPA you are trying to install.

You cannot install software through the console terminal if you have the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) open or visa-versa.

You can also try logging out and back in, or restarting the computer as well, before retrying to install a PPA.

Hope this helps ...

^ that plus some

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
And to clarify, you're saying neither the terminal nor the Software Sources tool is producing any output, both just hang the entire system, both on Mint and on Ubuntu? That's more than weird.

I am trying to add a ppa from noobslab.com in order to install some icons. I just tried it in Virtualbox and it worked using Mint 19.1. I only had the terminal open and no other program. I have restarted the system several times. What happens is that after I paste the command for adding the repo and type in my password, the terminal just sits there. I have tried waiting for several minutes and nothing happens but when I go to close the terminal, it tells me there is a process running even though nothing happened and usually you get the confirmation dialogue 2-3 seconds after the password. Here is the output you asked for:

Hi perdomot,

You are still not being very clear, which Noobslab PPA which icon sets are you interest in.

Is this the PPA you are referring to?

Collection of icons PPA - NoobsLab
https://launchpad.net/~noobslab/+archive/ubuntu/icons

I really like NoobsLab website and their content. But, a lot of their software in their various PPA's have not been updated for Linux Mint 19.x based on Ubuntu 18.04 yet Linux Mint 18.x Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial deb files may install from the PPA.

SOLVED!!

After trying out my laptop with Linux and seeing the same problem, I thought the issue my be with my internet connection so I turned off my router for a minute and after it rebooted, I was able to add the ppa. Looks like something in the way the terminal was trying to communicate and add the ppa via the internet was scrambled(power surge?). I tested it by adding both a nooblab ppa and a webupd8 ppa and both could be added. Thanks for feedback and help.

Hi perdomot,

That's cool that it was just your router's Internet connection. Needing to reset one's router is not an uncommon procedure.

FYI: Although a lot of PPA's are perfectly safe to install especially if they are for a specific application, sometimes some PPA's can cause issues where they have many applications. The main noobslab PPA has applications that might conflict with Linux Mint 19.x (Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic) where a lot of those updated applications are already available in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM). So, if you want an application from their main PPA, you might consider downloading the deb file(s) from the PPA for Bionic or Xenial for that application(s) and use those.
