Without any information impossible to offer any comment. Read viewtopic.php?f=17&t=83444

If shutting down with the power button - DON'T. Try Alt + PrtScn + REISUO (shutdown) or REISUB (reboot). Keep the Alt key pressed for the whole sequence.

The risk with a hard shutdown is that there is a risk that you might corrupt the filesystem. Most of the time you get away with it. REISUO does a safe shutdown.

Doesn't help with the original problem, suspect the kernel version, but in the absence of further information...

What are REISUO and REISUB?

Just one of several:
http://blog.kember.net/articles/reisub- ... x-restart/

R: Switch the keyboard from raw mode to XLATE mode
E: Send the SIGTERM signal to all processes except init
I: Send the SIGKILL signal to all processes except init
S: Sync all mounted filesystems
U: Remount all mounted filesystems in read-only mode
B: Immediately reboot the system, without unmounting partitions or syncing

Except we don't use init anymore, systemd has taken over the world :(

Interesting. I have been using Linux more or less for 20 years. I never heard about that. Obviously less is more correct than more. I could not trigger that on my notebook. Should it be in uppercase?

No, as long as you have the alt key pressed. Dependent on the problem, I've found sometimes it works, sometimes not.

Alternatives: I've found that when shutdown now doesn't work in a terminal, halt -f does, but not always and of course you need access to a terminal

I added "kernel.sysrq=1" to the file /etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf and rebooted. Fn + Alt + PrtScr, released PrtScr and Fn and tipped very slowly "reisuo". It worked. Thank you!
