Hydrogen drum machine not starting

Post by dbrich »

Hi, has anybody had same experience - since I upgraded to Mint 20 I cannot start Hydrogen Drum Machine.
It seems to have some troubles with QT:

JackShmReadWritePtr::~JackShmReadWritePtr - Init not done for -1, skipping unlock
JackShmReadWritePtr::~JackShmReadWritePtr - Init not done for -1, skipping unlock
qt5ct: palette support is disabled
qt5ct: custom style sheet is disabled
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Anybody has an idea how to fix that?

I have not, but Hydrogen 1.0.2 was released just a week ago. Have you tried that?
In Software Manager the latest review is from 4/2/2021 and says:
With update to Mint 20 it stopped working. Even the default drum set is missing and previously created patterns and songs are producing no sound. What happened?

The version available in Software Manager is 1.0.0
I would like to avoid compilation, if somehow possible...

I don't blame you. I sure can't find a deb file. You may have to wait.

Here's some 1.0.1 .deb files:

It looks like I would rather need an older version - the 1.0.1 requires QT 5.14.1, Mint 20 has QT 5.12 libraries... it does not install
could explain the segmentation fault error...

Is there a possibility to upgrade QT in this Mint Version, without breaking something else?

Probably not, but give it a try:

Make a backup first! I've never had much luck doing that. (Edit: it might be easier to upgrade to 20.1...?)

FWIW, I installed hydrogen in Mint 20.1 and it's running OK, despite some complaining (mostly about jack, which you don't need, its running thru pulseaudio).
libqt5core5a package is 5.12.8+dfsg-0ubuntu1

Code: Select all

$ hydrogen
qt5ct: using qt5ct plugin
QApplication: invalid style override passed, ignoring it.
Available styles: cleanlooks, gtk2, cde, motif, plastique, qt5ct-style, Windows, Fusion
...
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server request channel
exec of JACK server (command = "/usr/bin/jackd") failed: No such file or directory
...lots of these:
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server request channel
...
Do you have qt5ct installed? You might also need the first of these environment variables (qt is pretty funky), the other two might be handy:

Code: Select all

.profile:export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=qt5ct
.profile:export QT_FONT_DPI=96 # <-- changes font size!
.profile:export QT_STYLE_OVERRIDE=gtk # Use gtk font settings (dunno if it's gtk2 or 3)
Edit: I changed it to QT_STYLE_OVERRIDE=gtk2 and hydrogen's "QApplication: invalid style override passed, ignoring it." went away. Funny, though, ocenaudio uses qt and it didn't complain...qt is pretty funky...and not in a good way.

qt5ct: palette support is disabled
qt5ct: custom style sheet is disabled
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
I got core dumped the first time I ran the program, when I exited it normally. After that it didn't complain about jack and didn't core dump.

Have you tried setting the QT variables?
