[SOLVED] LibreOffice - Strange Characters in spreedsheet

Post by coffee412 »

Hello,

I upgraded a client computer from LM18 to LM20 (mate desktop) with a fresh install. When opening Libreoffice that he uses for work the spreedsheets have errors in them (open doc format). It appears like they are trying to print Asian characters. However, This is English (American) and there should be none.

Im still running LM18 so I opened the document on my computer and they open fine with no problems in the characters.

Here is a screen shot:

Any help would be appreciated as he has to get some spreed sheets out for work.

That fixed it. Your fantastic!

Now, Is there a setting in libreoffice to use that font for default? Or do I have to change all the spreedsheet documents? He has about 100 spreedsheets, Thats why I ask :(

What is interesting is that the spreedsheets that were made on previous versions of calc when they load they do not have the right default. In fact, The default font is blank. I have to select the font in order to correct the issue and then save the spreadsheet. Since my friend has like 100 spreadsheets, I was wondering if there is a way to have all the spreadsheets load with that font. However, I think the font setting is saved in each spreadsheet. So, You have to go thru the extra step of changing the font on each one.

I fired up a VM of LM 19 and it didnt have that problem. It loaded one of the spreadsheets with no problem. So, Im thinking they changed something in the layout of the spreadsheet or something like that?

I am going to reload LM 19 for my friend since there is still support on it for about 2 years. So, I will mark this solved.

I really appreciate your responses and want to thank you very much. I will probably look more into this when I have more time this week and try and see what is exactly happening.

Have a great week.

Arial is a Microsoft font. You might try this before erasing your friend's drive https://itsfoss.com/install-microsoft-fonts-ubuntu/

Darn, I think it would work. Do you want me to do it on my test machine? I'm on Mint 20.1 Cinnamon.

I just want to say thank you very much!

I had to hurry and get this computer back out to the owner as he runs his business on it. Knowing about this now is great and will help quite a bit. :)

Big THANKS!
