After updating to kernel 5.11 computer shuts down "twice"

Post by Intruder101 »

Hello there
After I updated to Kernel 5.11 (I used before 5.8) when I shut down the computer it take X5 the time and it shutsdown in 2 steps
Before I switched it was 3-4 seconds with the MINT LOGO and that's it, now it does the same, and then the screen turns black, then the MINT logo shows again and it takes another 15 seconds to shut down completely.
Kinda weird problem, seems harmless but it feels like "somethings wrong

Howdy. Why did you update to the 5.11 Kernel?

To go back, reboot - hold down Shift to get into grub - select Advanced - Select the old kernel - let it boot up - Start Update Manager - select View - Linux Kernels - and delete the 5.11 kernel.

The 5.8 kernel went end of life in August. Anyone using it would need to update to the 5.11 kernel to continue receiving support.

Have you checked to see if you have the most recent BIOS/UEFI update?

I suggest checking /var/log/syslog to see if there are any timegaps in the shutdown messages. That might give an idea of what is happening.

Hey, How do I check UEFI updates?
I checked /var/log/syslog but couldn't understand where to search, the dates I found was too old
Basically whats stopping me from going back to 5.4? is there much difference?

Funny, I started a thread in which I describe pretty much the exact same issue. I searched for an existing topic, perhaps not in all categories though.. Anyway, I'll mark it as duplicate. viewtopic.php?f=46&t=357630

I don't know.

It's probably worth giving the 5.4 kernel a try with that Advanced selection in Grub. There is probably a lot of difference between those 2 kernels, but I use the 5.4 kernel because it has always worked well for me.

You go to the ASUS website and see if your laptop has the latest version available. ASUS may have it listed as BIOS, but technically the firmware on newer computers is UEFI and not BIOS. I have highlighted the version inxi shows as in your current computer.

Machine:

Your computer's cpu came out after the 5.4 kernel. Improvements to the kernel which would apply to your computer's cpu would only be found in newer kernels. People running the 5.4 kernel on newer hardware such as yours have run into issues with drivers not working as well and system freeze issue.

You can return to the 5.4 kernel and see if it works well for you, but based on feedback I have received from others on the forum, I recommend the 5.11 kernel for 10th-gen Intel cpus.

You have different hardware, so I would not call it a "duplicate". Only if you were using the exact same model VivoBook (and you are not) would it be a duplicate.
