II cannot help you with XFCE, but for a first test:
Open Users & Groups and create a new account for testing. Reboot and log into the new account. How does it appear there?
Gotcha!

it's the same i'm afraid

thank you for taking the time to respond

edit: i should have said, the network icon is normal size before connecting to the VPN, it's just the padlock icon after connecting to VPN that is tiny.

Now it sounds, as if your VPN gives the trouble.
Gotcha!

as in vpn provider? but it is the same with 2 different providers.

i set these vpns up manually on 19 (via configue vpn... option in network manager) because the provider/s didn't have a linux client

i can still connect to them after the upgrade and they appear to all work the same, it's just the icon for it that is the issue.

i have tried changing themes, and tried various settings and a couple of things i found online but am stuck im afraid :/

As I said I have no knowledge about XFCE. All I can do is taking the given information, putting one and one together and say, how it appears to me. Wait for a XFCE experienced user.
Gotcha!

There is an option to adjust panel icon size automatically in Panel -> Preferences dialogue Appearance tab, and it may be worth manually setting the icon size to see if that enlarges that tiny network icon.

You need to disable the autosize option for the manual size setting to become visible.

thank you.

this does change the size of it, but it does so at the same proportion of the other icons

eg, when set to 50 it comes out like this

try to change desktop theme.. it looks like VPN lock icon is wrong.
On my Xfce I have the lock hanging on the low right on top the default network icon, but you seem to only have the lock without the network icon.
So try change the desktop theme to see if this is on them all or just the theme you have loaded.

thank you

not sure if this is the right theme, but in appearance, if i change "icons" theme from mint-y to adwaita it comes out like this
applet3.png
applet3.png (4.33 KiB) Viewed 271 times
so it has changed, but still too small

and if i change "style" theme from mint-y to adwaita it just inverts the colours like this

thanks again, i've tried all the themes in the appearance window now (both style and icons tabs) but none have made it larger.

i changed to the "humanity" icon theme and then also did a reboot in case it was needed, as can be seen from below it has made it a bit darker but still small :/

It really looks as the icon is off as the little lock should be on top of the network icon.. not replace the icon itself... I'm so trying to remember where all icons are but I just have a mind freeze at the moment
It was so long ago i used Mint and manipulate all my icons.

thank you so much.

im pretty sure on my pc, on 19.3 before the upgrade, the padlock icon did completely replace the square icon (for just my normal ethernet) after connecting to the VPN, but the padlock was obviously visible and the correct size.

this is not majorly drastic stuff obviously but it is just annoying and i like checking my vpn is connected by looking for the padlock.

Code: Select all

find /usr/share/icons -name '*vpn*'

I think it was a hint to me.
as i did wrote: (I'm so trying to remember where all icons are)

My local time is 23:59 and i do feel a bit fuzzy in my thinking.
I do still trying to remember when I did a lot of customization back in the late 2019.. nowadays I mostly use stock settings for themes, only that I have kidnapped Mint's themes over to my debian install as i liked the look from mint Xfce. :D
Debian Xfce themes is boring.
