Screensaver comes on, but monitor never turns off

Post by Takehiko »

Before the upgrade to LM 21 I had my screensaver configured to come on after 10 min and the monitor to power off after 15 minutes, which it did. But ever since the upgrade, the screensaver comes on but the monitor never turns off. I have also booted off the installation media and I get the same behavior, which to me would indicate that this isn't a configuration/settings problem.

I don't see any obvious error in Xorg.0.log nor the dmesg output.

I don't see anything related to monitor or power in syslog, but I do see these entries related to screensaver:

Code: Select all

I'm not sure what else to look at or what else to try for debugging. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Manually turning my monitor on and off is a real pain.

Here's my system info:

What kernel series were you using in LM20.3? Were you using the 5.15 kernel before you upgraded?

DPMS is usually what handles turning the monitor off and that usually relates to the graphics driver.

I do not know that it will affect this issue, but B550M DS3H (rev. 1.x) indicates the F15 BIOS/UEFI became available last month.

I had 5.15.0-46 installed at the time of the upgrade according to my Timeshift snapshot.

Good catch on the new BIOS. Just installed F15, but no change unfortunately.

Anything else to try or look at?

If you turn off the screensaver does the monitor turn off at the appropriate time?

Does the Xorg.0.log show DPMS is set for the monitor?

Disabling the screensaver has no effect. Same result. The screen goes black for about 5 seconds and then comes back on.

Code: Select all

/var/log$ grep DPMS Xorg.0.log
Xorg.0.log:[ 11.154] (II) AMDGPU(0): DPMS capabilities: Off
Xorg.0.log:[    11.211] (==) AMDGPU(0): DPMS enabled
Xorg.0.log:[ 11.218] (II) Initializing extension DPMS

I did a search and found I've been through this exercise already with someone using AMD graphics on LM21. Their GPU is different and they found in this post the issue seemed to be related to the HDMI port.

However in another topic where the person had Intel graphics, that person discovered in this post the problem was with their DP port and not the HDMI.

Both of them found a way to work around the issue, but you only have one monitor and the inxi output is only showing HDMI ports available so we will have to come up with a different solution. I do not know what is different that you are now seeing the problem when you did not in the past.

You could see if running this works to "manually" turn off the monitor.

Code: Select all

sleep 1 && xset dpms force standby

I tried the sleep and xset command. Ran it as root. Screen went black for about 10 seconds, but the monitor never went to sleep, and then the picture came back. Pretty much same thing that happens after the power management timeout, but stayed black for a bit longer than that.

I did a search on the monitor and found a review on Amazon where the person mentions:
The big con is for some reason when the monitor goes into standby it loses connection to the PC. I've never had another monitor do this and keeps me from recommending this as a main monitor in a dual monitor setup. If you are only using this monitor it's fine. If you are using 2 it can cause some strange things to happen depending on where your windows were before the monitor powers down. Since I'm using it as a secondary monitor it's not a deal breaker, and if you set screen to blank instead of going into standby you will never notice the issue, but it is there.
They do not mention what operating system they are using, but I would guess it is Windows. (Most people using something other than Windows mention that in their reviews.) I realize you said it was working in LM20.3, but it just seemed odd to find someone else having what would seem to be an issue related to the same function (but in the reverse in that yours never turns off).

I checked amdgpu bug reports and all I could find were monitors waking up right after being suspended. That could be related to your issue considering the results of the xset command.

I do not know of any other possible workarounds. Maybe someone else will.

I made an interesting discovery this morning. If I am not logged in, just sitting at the login prompt, then the power save works. But when I am logged in, then it doesn't. If I log back out, power save works again.

Does that help shed any light on the situation?

I also reverted back to the last kernel version that I had installed with LM20, which was 5.15.0-41, but that didn't change anything.

Open Users & Groups and create a new account for testing. Reboot and log into the new account. How does it appear there?

It is not user specific. I created a brand new user and that had the exact same problem.

After your last post I thought, that the problem might possibly be account related, but it is obviously system related.

It was at 5.15.0-41 before I did the upgrade.

I have installed that same build now after the upgrade too, but the issue persists.

I am not sure, if the following is doable in the live system, but if so try to reproduce the issue with the live system.

I have reproduced the same behavior booting off the install media. I assume that's what you meant by live system.

The good news: You understood me correctly. Sadly the good news end here.

It sounds as a bug. If this is related with your hardware is something, what I cannot tell, because I use LM 21 in a virtual machine.
If nobody come with a new idea, you might open an issue here: https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/issues

I suppose you could try with a live session of LM21 MATE or Xfce to see if the issue is something in the base Ubuntu 22.04 or if it is something related to Cinnamon.

This was a good idea. I downloaded and booted LM21 Xfce. Same behavior their as well.
