Dropbox running from an unsupported location

Post by hardbop200 »

Hello everyone,

I'm running Linux Mint 13 Maya MATE edition (32 bit), and have installed Dropbox from the Software Manager application. When I start Dropbox, I get a message that says:
Dropbox is running from an unsupported location
It then tells me that I can go to the Dropbox site and download the installer. However, the installer wants to install Dropbox with Nautilus extensions, and if my Google-fu is correct, Mint does not use Nautilus. Is this the reason for the "unsupported location" message? If this is something I can safely ignore I'm 100% ok with that, but my curious nature wants to know why I get this message. :)

Finally, my deepest thanks for a wonderful release! I've been a Debian guy for years and have avoided Ubuntu for various reasons; Mint seems like the perfect balance between the two.

Thanks,

Josh

I have the same question -- any other Dropbox users out there using Mint/MATE who know how to get DropBox integration with Caja?

Or do I need to install nautilus side-by-side (which seems like it may not be the best plan?)

Thanks!

Turns out some kind soul has converted nautilus-dropbox to caja...

https://github.com/mate-desktop/caja-dropbox

Not available in the repositories yet it seems... may have to build from source. Hmm... anyone know of a PPA that has it? Or a .deb package?

I would build it but I'm tracking mate-desktop.org so I can't fulfill the dependencies without removing something or the other. The odyssey ended with:

Code: Select all

äxl,
what versions of libcairo2 and libcairo2-dev you have installed? the 1.10.2-2ubuntu2 i believe are *not good* for compiling, you need this one (but it isn't an easy update)

Anyway, I've just registered and Dropbox works oob. So I guess I would only need caja-dropbox for right-click actions ...
That's not worth "frankensteining" more. ;) nautilus-dropbox gives me only a green tick on synced files but no extra options (though I'm still in MATE).

Since the Linux 13 MATE DVD installs Nautilus too, and Dropbox pops that up when you click on it, Caja integration isn't absolutely necessary. If I need the integration features, I can just click on the Dropbox icon. But it would be really nice.

I wonder if this guy ever gets around to updating his packages for Precise whether the caja-dropbox one will work for Maya too:

https://launchpad.net/~gfunkmonk/+archi ... /+packages

I tried installing it and it conflicted with the latest Dropbox deb (it wanted to overwrite an icon of all things!). Which is weird.

Hi folks,

I recently installed LM 13 with Mate on my Netbook and it runs pretty well. Dropbox installation did not work for me, even the caja-dropbox install failed. A while ago I found a way to install dropbox on Xfce, LXDE and other WMs on the net. So I tried it this way:

1. In a terminal download dropbox from the web:
cd && wget -c -O - http://www.getdropbox.com/download?plat=lnx.x86 > dropbox.tar.gz

2. Extract the file:
tar xzf dropbox.tar.gz

3. cd to the .dropbox-dist folder, make dropbox and dropboxd executable and start Dropbox:
cd .dropbox-dist
chmod 700 dropbox*
./dropbox &

4. Go to Menu - Controlcenter - Startup settings - add:
(Sorry folks, my system is running with german localisation, so I have to guess what the path is.)
Name: Dropbox
Command: ~/.dropbox-dist/dropbox

This lets Dropbox start automatically after login. You'll see the dropbox icon in the panel. But unfortunately there is no right click menu entry to create a download link for a file in the public folder.

Hope this helps.

Why bother with mint-dropbox or caja-dropbox, when you can just use the deb package already packaged by the dropbox team ?

I could be wrong, but I doubt that includes integration with the Caja file manager (to show the little green checkboxes on files, and provide the "Dropbox" item in the right-click drop-down menu.)

I should be clear: the dropbox service itself worked just fine for me (installed from the repositories). And in fact the nautilus integration is working fine (since I installed nautilus alongside caja). It'd just be nice to have Dropbox integration with Caja...

Ah, yes, you're right. Looking over the Synaptic logs, I see that it got installed when I installed rhythmbox. Sorry about that.
