Skype 4.0 for Linux

Post by mint-me »

The Linux version of Skype has finally got an update to Skype 4.0, and can be downloaded here: http://www.skype.com/go/download/
I got the Ubuntu 64-bit version (.deb file) and seems to work even better than previous version.
Before installing to avoid dependency problems, remove old Skype 2.2 like this:
sudo apt-get autoremove skype
then launch the .deb install and follow prompts. Works fine on Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon 64-bit.

The first time I ran this on Linux Mint Debian Edition XFCE 64-bit, after having installed the proper 64-bit .deb right from Skype, it hard-crashed this Athlon 64 with MSI mainboard. It was one of exactly two hard crashes in the first week of using this reliease, so I must conclude that this release is not ready for prime time yet. I've also had some mysterious (but probably unrelated) problems getting my microphone to work at all. The tools for debugging sound problems are really primitive, i.e. nonexistent, in this release.
