After I posted the above I went to earth.google.com and downloaded the latest stable release. The version in the repositories is 6.1.0.4857-r0 which according to google's site is a Beta release.
I purged the current installation and installed the 6.2 version which I had downloaded from Google's site. And --guess what?? I got the same results as with the Beta version.
What now?
This problem dissappeared. The only thing I did was to change the screen resolution tfrom 1920 x 1080 to 1600 x 900 and googleearth started up and works fine. I don't know if this changing the res did the trick (maybe a video card issue??) or if it was just a coincidence.
