Need some help installing JRE

Postby spacer » Tue Jul 24, 2012 5:44 pm

Hi everyone
I was trying to install jre. But when trying to execute the file the terminal said cannot execute binary file.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

This is what I typed in:

Code: Select all

ruben@Mint /usr/local $ sudo chmod a+x jre-7u5-linux-i586.rpm
ruben@Mint /usr/local $ ./jre-7u5-linux-i586.rpm
bash: ./jre-7u5-linux-i586.rpm: cannot execute binary file

Thanks in advance

P.S. I can't install software with the software manager either :?: :?: :?:

This way:

1. Remove all IcedTea related packages via Synaptic
2. Download Oracle Java (self extracting)
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual_v6.jsp
3. make a folder /usr/local/java
sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/java
4. Copy jre-6u33-linux-i586.bin to /usr/local/java and go to the folder.

An example:
sudo cp /home/mint/Downloads/jre-6u33-linux-i586.bin /usr/local/java
cd /usr/local/java

5. Make the file executable
sudo chmod a+x jre-6u33-linux-i586.bin

6. Install Java
sudo ./jre-6u33-linux-i586.bin

7. Make a link for browsers
sudo ln -s /usr/local/java/jre1.6.0_33/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
8. Open an empty page in Firefox and write about:plugins

Ok so now that I got java (on websites) running I try to open a .jar file and this happens:

Code: Select all

ruben@Mint ~/Bureaublad $ java -jar 'application.jar'
The program 'java' can be found in the following packages:
 * gcj-4.4-jre-headless
 * gcj-4.5-jre-headless
 * openjdk-6-jre-headless
Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>
ruben@Mint ~/Bureaublad $  sudo apt-get install * gcj-4.5-jre-headless
Pakketlijsten worden ingelezen... Klaar
Boom van vereisten wordt opgebouwd
De status informatie wordt gelezen... Klaar
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'firefox.desktop'
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'application.jar'
ruben@Mint ~/Bureaublad $
