Removing Gnome Panel in Mint 13 MATE

Postby jamsoolee » Wed Jul 25, 2012 2:20 am

Hey all,

I was wondering how to remove the panel in Linux Mint 13 w/ MATE.
I attempted it in Cinnamon, but gave up and am trying on MATE, but I'm getting no answers :(
I want to use Docky or AWN over the panel and need it gone.
gconf-editor does not work in this version :/

Rename (not delete!) the file /usr/bin/mate-panel, and restart your session.
That's it ;)

There is a less radical way which hides the Panel almost completely:

Go to the "Panel Properties" (right-click on the panel an choose "Properties") then mark the "Show hide buttons" setting (and the "Arrows on hide buttons" if wanted) as shown below.

Afterwards you can hide/unhide the panel to the left or the right with a click on the "hide button". This hides the panel and expands maximized windows all the way to the bottom of the screen (see screenshot below).

This way you can access the panel if ever needed and you don't have to mess with the system itself.
Software: Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" - KDE (64-bit)
