Can't use gparted with usb stick

Post by spacer » Mon Oct 08, 2012 10:32 am

Hello
When I tried to open Gparted it opened and then quickly closed. So I unplugged my usb flash drive and then gparted worked.
But when I plugged it back in and pressed refresh devices it closed again. I need gparted to format my flash drive.

This is the error i got:

Code: Select all

user@Mint ~ $ gksu /usr/sbin/gparted

Pfft I'm really starting to get fed up with how complicated everything is in linux.
Anyways if somebody knows how to fix this. Please let me know

You seem to have run into a libparted error that affects some USB sticks: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/710696

The solution given there is to use from the terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo cfdisk -z /dev/sdX
Where you replace /dev/sdX with the device name of your USB stick (if you have one hard disk, probably /dev/sdb). The -z option ignores the existing partition table, and you can then create a new partition table and create a new partition to format your USB stick.
