Texlive [Solved]

Wanting to 'have a go' with the Tex typesetting package for the first time, as it seems to be the Ubuntu favourite for Tex. So I have downloaded and installed Texlive using the metapackge.

But I can't find a way to run it! Texlive doesn't appear in the menu anywhere and the terminal can't run it.

Please can anyone help me? I can't find the solution in either Google or the Mint forum.

Navigate to File System>Bin> search TexLive and right click Open. That should open the program or try Alt F2 type in texlive. Once you established you can open your program you can either create a launcher and/or add it to the menu.

Unfortunately, neither suggestion work.

I navigated to file system/bin, but there is no texlive file there. Alt>F2 gives ' couldn't open location'.

As a test, I've just downloaded another program, and that appears in the menu and runs!

My mistake! It's filesystem/ usr/bin not filesystem/bin. Also you can look into usr/share, though you can't launch from there, but if it's usr/share it is installed on your system.

Or, you could learn to use the 'whereis' and 'locate' commands.

I often use locate and whereis. Whereis just returns a blank. Nothing which locate shows is of any help (although there are a good number of texlive files listed).

It's not in filesystem/usr/bin nor /usr/share.

I have reinstalled it but get the same results. I have installed it in Mint13 XFCE. The same.

This has set me wondering if texlive is a self-contained package with its own front end, or if it needs another program to run it. I assumed it was self-contained.

I wonder if anyone on the forum uses it?

Done some investigating I believe you're right there is no GUI for Linux version.

TeXlive is not an editor, it's the LaTeX system (like MikTeX on Windows). So you'll feed it tex files, and it will answer pdf or dvi files.

I recommand Kile, TeXworks or TeXmaker to edit and compile TeX/LaTeX files.
