How to reset cinnamon to default settings? (SOLVED)

Post by Brahim Salem » Thu Jan 10, 2013 3:11 pm

I tried to edit an active Cinnamon theme and lost my desktop. I restarted my PC, reinstalled Cinnamon, tried to change themes from gnome classic desktop, ran in terminal

Code: Select all

gsettings reset-recursively org.cinnamon
and

Code: Select all

cinnamon --replace
then

Code: Select all

cinnamon --reset
but none of these methods had been successful in restoring my desktop! I was wondering how to reset Cinnamon to defaults with terminal or by editing files!! Please help I need my desktop and software now I had lots of work!!heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp :(

I saw your post earlier, when you hadn't ran these commands yet. I don't know how to reset the Cinnamon settings, except from Cinnamon's troubleshooter on the panel :( You could create a new user, and that user should get the default Cinnamon configuration and not yours. I'm not sure where to go from there, I hope somebody else can pitch in.

why don't you try to delete (or move from .themes) the theme that crashed cinnamon?

When I run

Code: Select all

 cinnamon --replace
I get:

Code: Select all

mint@mint-Inspiron-N5040 ~ $ cinnamon --replace
JS LOG: About to start Cinnamon
JS ERROR: !!! WARNING: 'anonymous function does not always return a value'
    JS ERROR: !!! WARNING: file '/home/mint/.local/share/cinnamon/extensions/CoverflowAltTab@dmo60.de/switcher.js' line 98 exception 0 number 157

Window manager warning: Log level 16: Error registering polkit authentication agent: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: An authentication agent already exists for the given subject (polkit-error-quark 0)

JS LOG: network applet: Cannot find connection for active (or connection cannot be read)
Window manager warning: Log level 8: gdk_error_trap_pop_internal: assertion `trap != NULL' failed
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
And when I run:

Code: Select all

cinnamon reset
I get:

Code: Select all

bash: /usr/bin/mint-fortune: No such file or directory
mint@mint-Inspiron-N5040 ~ $ cinnamon reset
Window manager warning: Screen 0 on display ":0.0" already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager.

i see there 2 warnings
this extension

Code: Select all

'/home/mint/.local/share/cinnamon/extensions/CoverflowAltTab@dmo60.de
is erroring, probably it's a good idea to remove it;

and afaik cinnamon is still complaining that there's another WM running An authentication agent already exists for the given subject

PS: i know that compiz is not compatible with gnome-shell or with cinnamon but that's what your .xsessions says

.config is a hidden file in your home directory :D

!!! DO NOT DELETE .config !!!

That is a hidden directory that holds the settings for many of your applications. eBook readers, web browsers, music players, editors, office suites, file managers, movie players, and much more all have their settings in the .config directory.

I didn't, and I wouldn't!

It's obvious there's more than Cinnamon settings within '.config' And, yes, it's a folder and not a file.

I have been trying to reset Cinnamon settings to their defaults, as I cannot get anything to "launch" in Cinnamon 2.0
