default camera importer

Post by shalom938 »

Hi all
I just installed mint 14 mate to a friend's laptop instead of her old vista.
it appears that her most important need is image organizing and importing from camera. and changing the way she thinks is a much tougher job then finding a tool that will behave the way she is used to in vista.
she is not a professional , what she needs is what she was used to for years:
* when camera is connected auto import all photos to one folder and give her the option to name the folder. the folder should be under ~/Pictures
* browse the ~/Pictures folder and be organized by the folder names she gave when importing from the camera.
* ability to create a new folder and add pictures to it.
* minimal editing, mostly rotate.
* rename one file.
* rename a folder.

I had to import all her photos from her previous hd that I backed up with dd to external usb drive.
I tried shotwel but shotwel imports and organizes by dates and the tags it gave where a mess,not a good choice for her.
picasa looks too much.

I'm going to try gthumb, but currently gthumb freezes when i start it up, I think I will manage with that.

please suggestions are welcome on a simple yet clever tool.
and how do I set the default camera importing tool that will start when the camera is connected like shotwel did.

Thank you

Thanks, I will try it also. I read here http://www.damonlynch.net/rapid/download.html that version 0.4.5 is not working in mist and they suf=ggest to install their ppa and upgrade to 0.4.6, but in mint the version is 0.4.5-1, is it a fixed version or do I still have to install the ppa and upgrade to 0.4.6 ?

Install the PPA and after that version 0.4.6. If they suggest to upgrade to the latest version, always follow that advice.

Installation of the PPA:
Terminal command

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dlynch3/ppa
Enter your password and follow the instructions in the terminal

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install rapid-photo-downloader

Rapid Photo Downloader is great, but it only imports, its not an organizer. I think I'll use it together with gthumb as an organizer/viewer.
Rapid Photo Downloader is better in that it imports videos to the videos folder , gthumb imports everything to the same folder.

Thanks

You need an organizer as well? Maybe Shotwell Photo manager might be the tool for you: http://yorba.org/shotwell/
