Unencrypt Truecrypt Drive

Postby laukce01 » Sat Feb 16, 2013 9:27 am

I encrypted an entire 500GB drive via Truecrypt, however I want to un-encrypt it. How do I do that?

You don't. You must copy the drive contents out of the encrypted disk then format the disk.

You mean change it from an encrypted hd into an uncrypted one. As pointed out you can't. You have to mount it and copy all the contents out like mentioned and reformat it.

That is why for my encrypted I only use encrypted folder for my critical sensitive data as can move, copy for flexible use on any computer that it may be needed.

This is a dumb question, but how do you reformat it?

There are no dumb questions, only dumb answers.

I recommend installing gparted and using that.

You can use this to identify the drive you mean to erase:

Code: Select all

sudo fdisk -l

Once you've correctly identified the drive, start gparted:

Code: Select all

sudo gparted

Then delete the partitions for the correct drive, create a new partition and format it. The gparted gui is easy to follow so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding your way around. However if you need to, click Help. The gparted manual will open.
