I personally never had that experience but, I did have the software manager crash;firefox block google (as untrusted) also have mouse disappear when hovering over software manager. I think my internet is to blame for some stuff. I live near a farm field that has giant power lines that run all the way into the mountain. I think it is some main power lines some 4o feet high. It blocks wifi and phone signal, does not help to live in a house with bad or old wiring. I think running your security program settings as regular as possible. It can be annoying a little but, better safe than in worry. :o

I would like to confirm that Synaptic crashes frequently on Mint 15 MATE 64bit. Did a fresh install on my wife's computer, and I had synaptic freeze up on me repeatedly as I was installing all of the programs she uses. A few details:

- I ran updates (after fresh install) before opening Synaptic.
- It froze up before I was able to install a single package.
- It did not freeze up immediately, but only after I had selected several packages to install (I was hoping to select everything and install at once)
- It would not force quit politely (left a persistent Zombie process that stopped new instances from opening). I had to "sudo killall synaptic" from terminal.
- Freezing happened a few more times before I was able to install all of the packages. I ended up installing them in small batches, hoping not to freeze it (which seemed to help).

System specs on the computer are (from memory): Intel dual core 2.1 Ghz, 4 GB DDR2, Intel chipset (Gigabyte mobo), integrated Intel graphics.
I can get more details if needed.

It's getting worse every day. If I run it form the terminal I get:
(synaptic:4158): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkNotebook 0x11034a0 is mapped but visible child GtkLabel 0x1371500 is not mapped

I think the problem was that I had wrong (corrupted) /etc/apt/sources.list and etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list files,
but it could also be that the synaptic crashes corrupted the files. It seems to work now after having copied the respective *.save versions
I'll report again in case the problem persists.

I've found that editing the repository list under Synaptic/Settings creates corrupted sources.list files
What's the recommended way to add repositories in linuxmint 15 ?

You're probably supposed to use the Software Sources tool.

However, I think the tool in Synaptic not working qualifies as a bug. And also, Synaptic should open the Software Sources tool, like older versions did.

I had the same problem just now: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=139795&p=742319

The repository editor in Synaptic is apparently broken and produces corrupted files, which then cause APT to crash...

I read in other sites that this could be related to Mate.
To confirm you can try to change your theme to some native mate themes and see if the crash still occurs ?
I am currently still using linuxmint 13 Maya, but I am currently evaluating linuxmint 15 using virtualbox
I find that unlike in linuxmint 13 Synaptic didn't follow the gtk themes that I choose (nimbus) and also there are warnings if I start synaptic from terminal

This is not related to MATE:
Open synaptic. Go to repositories menu. Then try one of this
(a) activate the removed repository (it's there but inactive) - you will get an error msg;
(b)try to edit removed url - you see the wrong "ap ps games" (or similar) and write the correct "apps games" - you will be without synaptic... forever... it seems

Guys, you seem to discuss more than one issue here (I counted three).

If you experience freezes, here's a place to drop a comment: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1178024
If you see strange messages about "visible child": https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1135687
If you have the corrupted settings problem with Synaptic's own repository manager: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1181573
(this one can be worked around by installing software-properties-gtk)

In all these cases, you can also click the "Does this bug affect you?" button and hope the package maintainer will do something :)

You could always upgrade or downgrade Synaptic to a newer (possibly better) or older (more stable) version, the default version for Mint 15 is literally called EXPerimental (0.80~exp2). The version from Ubuntu Quantal http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/synaptic and Debian wheezy (stable) is 0.75 and it seems good for Mint 15 when I tried it in 64-bit Mate & Cinnamon.

I've posted a tutorial on how to downgrade Synaptic or Gnome Disk Utility or other stuff but it's awaiting review or something. The basic steps are:

(1) Add the Ubuntu quantal repository "deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal main universe" OR the Debian wheezy (stable) software repository "deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian wheezy main"
(2 Debian source only) Add the Debian key 473041FA (terminal pasting this should work) "gpg --recv-keys 473041FA && gpg --export 473041FA | sudo apt-key add - "
(3) Use Synaptic to downgrade itself (Force Version) then Lock Version

To try the even newer version of Synaptic (0.80.2) available on Ubuntu saucy or Debian jessie (testing) and sid (unstable) use one of these repositories "deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy main universe" or "deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian jessie main" or "deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian sid main"

Or instead of adding a whole new software repository you could just download the specific .deb file from the Ubuntu or debian website, though you might have to download additional required dependent files (Gnome Disk Utility had a few extra dependencies). Synaptic's here http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/synaptic

And I would NOT use synaptic's Settings -> Repositories menu to change the software repositories in Mint 15, Mint has a different "Software Sources" program that seems a LOT better, and the Synaptic 0.80~exp2 seems to mess up the repositories.

Wouldn't it be easier to use Ubuntu repos (use this page to choose the version) instead?

Yes, it would be slightly easier to use Ubuntu sources instead of Debian (no adding debian's key).
I'll edit my post to change it to Ubuntu's instead, and mention debian as a possibility too. And mention that for a one-time downgrade of only synaptic it's even easier to just download the .deb file and install it without messing with sources at all.

0.75 synaptic's here fyi http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/synaptic

Did this, worked great, solved the problem (on Mint Mate 15 64bit).

Not sure why Mint Devs would put an experimental version of an important package as the default. Crashy bad!

This did not appear to be possible, as GDebi would refuse to install the older package and removing synaptic would have removed most of mate (and curiously installed a whack of KDE...).

I've had the freezing issue as well.. did a clean install of Mint15, and after having updated everything else, went to upgrade the kernel and Synaptic went into a perpetual tailspin.

I found the solution to this dilemma here:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=143118

Download the 0.75 Synaptic package.
Uninstall Synaptic using the Software Manager.
Use GDebi to install the 0.75 Synaptic package.
Open the new (old) Synaptic and lock the package version.

I cannot believe that Mint would choose to go with an experimental version of such a crucial package. SERIOUSLY UNIMPRESSED, MINT! :x

Edit: Having done this, I seem to have killed my Update Manager on both my Mint15 installs, so maybe it's best not to try the above..

Dear All,
I am very new to Linux Mint and faced the same problem.. But my problem was resolved by just deleting the file mentioned below:
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/local-repository.list

After deletion, I just created a new empty file with the same name and my problem was solved.
