[Solved]Mint 15 Mate Crash while working with update manager

Post by phptoao »

The motherboard is a msi K9VGM-V with VIA K8M890 chip-set and an AMD Athlon 64/FX/X2 processor , 2 x 2.1 GHz.
It is from 2007. I know that some would consider it a dinosaur... For me, it is not the newest, but not really very old either.

The machine was running various flavours of Ubuntu until 3 weeks ago. On 2 July 2013 I made a fresh install of Mint 15 Mate 32 bit, on a newly formatted partition. Today 25 July, I went for the routinely updates with the update manager. A small session, only 1MB to download, and then while installing, crash, black screen, machine dead (no error message of any kind).

The package being installed while the crash occured is apparently something with virtualbox. I do not use virtualbox knowingly, nor did I install it knowingly, but it might be part of the default install packages and thus need today's updates.

Reboot, back to the update manager. He tells that he was interrupted and the problem must be corrected manually with

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --configure -a

OK, if that is what you need, I'll do it.
Same story, crash, black screen. machine dead.

Reboot, back to update manager. He tells the same as last time. But this time I don't do the dpkg thing. Seems hopeless...

The problem is, that I won't be able to make future routine updates, as long as the problem is not corrected, but running dpkg manually as they recommend, leads to the same crash as update manager did.

Additionally the recommendation to run dpkg is accompanied by a line saying:
E: _cache->open() failed, please report

Not knowing where to report it, I report it here, not sure what exactly is meant.

So how can I correct this problem(s) ??? and have update manager happy again ?

Thanks

Thank you for the answer. It did help. After running "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get upgrade", I did run "sudo dpkg --configure -a" again and it did work this time. Now update manager and synaptic are happy again and do not complain any more.

Nonetheless, I attach the output of the apt-get commands. Update had a lot to tell, most lines start with Hit, Get or Ign. Upgrade didn't tell aqnything except the usual complaint. It would be interresting to know what the Hit,Get,Ign mean and what really happened.

I do also attach the output of the dpkg command that did finally work. What does it tell us ?

I tried to upload the outputs as a txt file, but "they" say "the extension txt is not allowed" !!! I always thought txt files are not dangerous ! So I put it directly in the Post... Here it is:

All normal for update.
Hit = found it
Get = got it
ign = ignored it

Once again, just to make sure we're OK, run
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

If you still get an error we need to dig a bit more.

Double check the Update-Manager gtk afterwards by running updtae manager.

Re: Mint 15 Mate Crash while working with update manager

Post by phptoao »

After my previous post, I installed a small application with synaptic and it went well.

So now I run "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get upgrade" once more. Update came with the usual list of hit,get,ign , but no complaint at the end. Upgrade did install a new kernel and whatever, but no complaint at the end. Then I launched the update manager GUI and it says that the system is up to date (obviously since apt-get just made the newest updates).

All seems to be well again, but still, I do not really understand what happened earlier and why I got into a kind of cul-de-sac.
Thank you for your help.
