Permission issues and a few more ?...

Postby valathor » Wed Jun 25, 2008 6:51 pm

First I want to say that I am new to Linux, so I may get confused a bit

Second, I'm having some problems with permission denied popups...
Like I go to drag a, lets say firefox, from the menue to the desktop to create a shortcut and it says that I don't have the permission to do so???
It happens with MANY different things, and it hinders me quite a bit, if somebody could help me with that it would help a lot.

Also, I read the manual, but it was made for Daryna, and is lacking some insight:

In Mintdesktop, what is Gnome composite???

And 1 last thing(for now anyway)

Has anyone in here played T.o.M.E.???
If so, could you tell me how to install it in Mint...

Thanks for being here to help :P
Please remember that I am quite Linux illiterate, so teach me like I'm a dummy

To give a simple answer first, Compositing is a way to make windows look nicer

It seems something is wrong - you should definitely not get a permission denied when you drag an icon from the menu to the desktop
Have you made anything "special" to your Mint?
What do you get if you do

Code: Select all

ls -l /home/your_username/Desktop
Image
Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

I am a dummy too, but noone teach me about Linux except myself. So just go for it. :P

Anyway, I have never fallen in such situation before. Did you make a clean install for Elyssa or just upgraded to it by dist-upgrade? The latter might bring conflict or, in another word, your system has been mixed up between Ubuntu Hardy and Elyssa.

Oh, I experienced this problem exactly as you mean when I tried to drag icons from, and just from favorite menu to desktop. If you drag them straight from listed menu, that should be fine then.
