Where did Firefox bookmarks.html go ?

Postby sarah » Tue Jul 01, 2008 8:36 am

I just installed Mint 5.0 and am having all kinds of mysterious issues that I did not have with Mint 4.0

One issue is....... what happened to the bookmarks.html file that used to be in the path:
.Mozilla/Firefox/xxxxxxxdefault ?

I normally just replace the new default bookmarks.html after I start up and shut down the Firefox browser and replace it with a bookmark file from another distro and I am good to go.

When I do this now in my fresh install of Mint 5.0 there is no bookmarks.html at all in the path mentioned above, and when I add my saved bookmarks.html from another distro, it is not recognized in the Mint Firefox bookmarks, it keeps showing the Mint default bookmarks.

What has been changed ? I don't get it !

Took me a while to get it -FF3 uses some other mechanism for bookmarks
Open the Bookmarks menu > Organize bookmarks > Export and import > Import from your html file

Thanks you so much Husse, I thought I was losing it for a while.......lol

Do you know of any Firefox documentation to cover this new method ? My concern is if there is no bookmarks.html file anymore, then we must use the info in the bookmark backup folder if one ever needs to restore the bookmarks again.

Personally I like the old way better, sounds easier to me.....but, "get used to it", I guess would be the correct attitude to have.

Frankly I haven't got a clue to what Mozilla has done
There is an option to export your bookmarks to html so perhaps we need to do that to back them up

The actual file has changed name from bookmarks.html to places.sqlite. So if you want to back it up, just go to your profile folder and it will be there.

More info can be found here.

I have not bothered to search for the bookmarks storage point - I've got enough to do any way - but there is no places.sqlite in my profile folder
There are a few other sqlite files so maybe it just has another name in Linux than Windows - the link above is for Windows

Strange, my profile folder has this file and I use Ubuntu with FF3. And I see that the link is for windows, but it should not be all that different in Linux.

Sorry - I forgot that I have two FF profiles folders - the old one for FF2 which is abandoned in Elyssa but I share home with some other Mint under the same user name (please don't do that - a recipe for disaster but I can handle a disaster :))

I thought that you did have more than one profile folder.

And it may need to be repeated: DO NOT USE THE SAME USERNAME IF YOU SHARE HOME BETWEEN DISTRO'S.
