Update Oracle Virtual Box from Ubuntu repo???

Postby krustybaguette » Thu Oct 17, 2013 4:30 pm

Hello,
My Lenovo X60 is running Linux Mint 13 with Oracle's Virtual Box HOST and I am of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it mentality."
Update Manger is showing three VBox updates virtualbox-guest-dkms~x11~utils. The version number associated with these updates is 4.1.12 which is older than my Oracle VBox installation, which is 4.2.16.

Generally since I started using Oracle's version of Virtual Box I've been very happy and I get update notifications by clicking on "check for updates" in the Help menu. At present it is showing that version 4.2.18 is available from the Ubuntu-Precise repo.
[*]Should I ignore what Update Manager is telling me?
[*]If I ran the 4.2.18 update would it most likely include what Update Manager is offering?
[*]Is there a way to prevent Update Manager from notifying me about VBox updates?

-Either upgrade or ignore. I doubt going from 4.2.16 to 4.2.18 will make a noticeable difference.
-No, it shouldn't. The upgrade that virtualbox offers downloads the .deb file manually. It doesn't go through the update manager and won't include the other updates.
-I'm not sure if it'll do the trick, but you can lock in a version by opening Synaptic Package Manager, locating the package you don't want to upgrade, selecting the package, then going to Package > Lock Version.

fyi, virtualbox 4.3 is out. The upgrade broke my XP virtual machine though, so I'm back to 4.2.18.

There is a way to keep the update manager from updating your Vbox. In the settings window there is a tab that should be called 'Ignored packages'. Go there, click on Add, and type the name of the package - in this case it should probably be virtualbox or virtualbox-nonfree, but firing off a search on the commandline gave me this:

Code: Select all

apt search virtualbox
p   virtualbox                      - x86 virtualization solution - base binarie
p   virtualbox:i386                 - x86 virtualization solution - base binarie
p   virtualbox-4.2                  - Oracle VM VirtualBox
p   virtualbox-4.2:i386             - Oracle VM VirtualBox
p   virtualbox-dbg                  - x86 virtualization solution - debugging sy
p   virtualbox-dbg:i386             - x86 virtualization solution - debugging sy
p   virtualbox-dkms                 - x86 virtualization solution - kernel modul
p   virtualbox-guest-additions-iso  - guest additions iso image for VirtualBox
pi  virtualbox-guest-dkms           - x86 virtualization solution - guest additi
p   virtualbox-guest-source         - x86 virtualization solution - guest additi
pi  virtualbox-guest-utils          - x86 virtualization solution - non-X11 gues
p   virtualbox-guest-utils:i386     - x86 virtualization solution - non-X11 gues
pi  virtualbox-guest-x11            - x86 virtualization solution - X11 guest ut
p   virtualbox-guest-x11:i386       - x86 virtualization solution - X11 guest ut
p   virtualbox-nonfree              - Oracle Virtualbox virtualization software.
p   virtualbox-qt                   - x86 virtualization solution - Qt based use
p   virtualbox-qt:i386              - x86 virtualization solution - Qt based use
p   virtualbox-source               - x86 virtualization solution - kernel modul

(You can probably puzzle out what is the package name and what isn't. Just pick what seems relevant to your system, and remember to add package names one-by-one, not all in the same entry.)
