After upgrading to Mint 16 from Mint 15, it has reverted my lock screen preferences (which were: don't do it!) and now the screen locks after 10 minutes (which, since the computer is used for my 2 year old to watch his favourite Thomas the Tank Engine series, is untenable).
The lock screen preferences (found in Preferences > Brightness & Lock) are seemingly ignored. I have it set to off. I can not locate any other particular preferences screen for configuring screen savers or screen locking.

Re: Lock screen preferences not working
I am using Linux Mint 16 MATE so if you are using a different flavor this may not help.
In my Preferences -> Screensaver I have several options
Regard the computer as idle after: which I set to the maximum of 2 hours
Activate screensaver when computer is idle: which I unchecked
Lock screen when screensaver is active: which I unchecked
Now if I want to lock the screen, I click Menu -> Lock Screen.

Hi,
do you have some "energysomething" icon?

Re: Lock screen preferences not working
I have "fixed" this problem.
It seems the menu entries in the 'Preferences' Menu are out of date. Under System Settings, there's Screensaver & Lock Settings, which seems to have done the trick.
The 'Brightness & Lock Settings' is a red herring. Presumably this is something that the update didn't capture .
