Seamonkey - "failed to execute child process..." [Explained]

Post by PussyCat » Sat Feb 08, 2014 5:52 pm

Using Mint 13 Xfce (64bit).

Download and untarred Seamonkey 2.24 from their site. Unfortunately when I try to launch by clicking on "seanonkey" (not the bin file) I am presented with an error pop-up
Failed to execute child process "/home/chris/Downloads/seamonkey/seamonkey" (No such file or directory).
The same happens wherever it placed - eg /opt (my favoured place for installs of this type.

If I try to launch from /opt/seamonkey with ./seamonkey it still reports "No such file or directory"

Perhaps I should try other methods described here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 6b#p812363 but would still like to understand why I'm failing so far?

Just yesterday updated Seamonkey along the same lines from terminal:

Code: Select all

cd p10
sudo tar xjf SeaMonkey/seamonkey-2.24.tar.bz2
Download was into directory p10/SeaMonkey
Then Run (Alt+F2): p10/seamonkey/seamonkey

Try that, and in your case replacing p10 by /opt. Maybe you'll then see where you went wrong

Alt+F2 has no effect on my system?!

So far, as described in OP, have tried clicking on seamonkey executable and in terminal typing /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey but either way the result is the same (as described above).

@ Tejas_0
Seamonkey 2.24 works on your computer because you have a 32 bit system

@ PussyCat
Seamonkey 2.24 does not work on your computer because you have a 64 bit system

See mozilla bug 937035
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=937035
That bug prevents the 64 bit version of Seamonkey 2.23 and 2.24 from running correctly on Mint.

Pussycat
you need to download Seamonkey 2.22.1 or the contrib (unofficial release) of 2.23.

You can download SeaMonkey 2.22.1 here
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/releases/2.22.1/linux-i686/en-US/seamonkey-2.22.1.tar.bz2

You have the option, also, of downloading the SeaMonkey 2.23 contrib (unofficial release)
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/seamonkey/releases/2.23/contrib/seamonkey-2.23.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2
That contrib (unofficial release) does work correctly in Mint 16 - I tested it. Should be the same in Mint 13

The bug I referred to is not scheduled to be fixed until the release of Seamonkey 2.26

Thanks austin.texas - that explains it!

It's just a pity that isn't made clear on their site. Only clue seems to be when searching for other versions there is a couple of lines referring to an unofficial 64bit.

I'll mark thhe thread as "Explained"!
