Upgrade from Mint 14 to Mint 16, broken packages

Post by schulmanworks » Mon Feb 17, 2014 4:09 am

So, I upgraded from Mint 14 to Mint 16. When I try to reinstall my old programs using the backup tool, I get the message:
Could not apply changes!
Fix broken packages first.
I've tried updating, upgrading, -f install, and dist-upgrade.

Any ideas?

You could try the following at command level (terminal) :

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get -f install
sudo dpkg --configure -a
-DataMan
Linux'd since 2005 Linux ID 422356 Ubuntu ID 15015

this type of upgrade doesn't work that much. there's a lot of dependency issues and even if they are all solved somehow, some softwares still won't work correctly. so you better install all of your softwares from the repository when you upgrade to a newer release. solving those issues are not worth the effort you need to make if the final result is not that satisfactory,is it?

jahid is correct. The backup tool is fine for restoring to the same version you backed up from, but definitely the wrong thing to do from one version to another.
A clean new install is the best option.

Here is what I do on a new installation - run this command listing your favorite programs

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install acetoneiso asunder dconf-tools grsync ffmpeg hardinfo hwinfo imagemagick imagemagick-doc smplayer gnome-color-chooser gnome-search-tool gnome-tweak-tool gparted gpick parcellite preload puddletag shutter simple-scan swapspace bluefish leafpad unoconv

Thank you all for the help. I'll just install everything manually as suggested.
