Making all media files open with VLC

The video players that come with Linux Mint seem to have color and frame rate issues, so I've downloaded the good old VLC media player. Now, how do I make this program the default media player? I found a guide to make it automatically play DVDs, so that part's done. And I know I'm able to right click say a .wmv file and then from the properties have VLC be the default wmv player. But what about all the other file formats? Is there no default list I can change? And also, in the recent documents part of the applications menu, it ignores the fact that I set vlc to be default for a given file format. I've even tried editing /etc/gnome/defaults.list but that seemed to have no effect. I even tried uninstalling Totem, but that didn't help. Without totem installed, trying to open a wmv from the recent documents list brings up a window saying there is no application, and right-clicking a wmv file in the file browser and choosing Properties says that it can't find a certain file from totem and it needs to make a makeshift properties window.

HELP!

You have "Preferred applications" in Control Center

For some reason, that only lets me choose the music player. On the Multimedia tab, there is just one option for "Multimedia player" and I have to choose between rhythmbox or totem. This seems very limited. Unless I'm supposed to select totem from the drop down menu and then enter a custom command? If so that is highly unintuitive.

Right click on the a file and select the open with tab.
Then click add and select vlc, now it should be check as the default.
Now it should be the default for that file type.
You will have to do this with every file type.(examples: .avi, .mkv, .wmv, etc)

Like I said, I already know how to do this. But this method isn't complete. It doesn't change what opens from the Recent Documents menu and it doesn't change the fact that all media file properties seem dependent on Totem (or Mplayer). Like set a wmv file to open with VLC, uninstall Totem, and then check the properties of a wmv file and you'll see what I mean.

So it opens with vlc after it's changed, but not from recent in the mintMenu?
This looks like a bug or missing feature of mintMenu.
It's reading the default info and not the users default info.
