about virt-viewer (and spice)

Post by m.ardito » Mon May 19, 2014 7:03 am

Hi,

New to mint, I have some debian-based linux experience, though, mainly headless servers and debian/ubuntu desktops.

Loved Mint at first sight and now I'm trying to replace my home pc operating system with Mint.
I like LTS version so I installed 13 maya for now (cinnamon): I'll switch to Qiana as soon as I'm confortable enough with the system.

Nearly everything works easily, but as sometimes I use my home pc to access remote work VMs (kvm+spice) I would like to use virt-viewer to access them (through openvpn which works great in maya).
My virt platform at work is proxmox 3.1, atm. and it needs at least virt-viewer 0.5.6 with spice support compiled (see http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/SPICE).

I did some research, and it seems that maya is a bit too old and that version isn't available now. No backports available to maya, afaik.
I guess next Qiana get me more recent versions of everything upstream and so also virt-viewer, which could be around 0.6.0 currently: is this right?
Is there any other way to get that requirement satisfied also on my current 13? Anyone got it compiled, and could share requirements, instructions?

my only other option is using the java/vnc console, which is useful but spice is better to me.
Any advice or experience to share would be great!

Thanks,
Marco

Hi,
I found this link which also has a ppa, perhaps that works on Mint 13 as well.

Add (Solved) to the topic-title of the first post when appropriate so others know they might find a solution here.

Thank you!
But there I read: "Packages from this PPA are supposed to work only on 64-bit boxes (amd64)" and I fear my old lenovo R60e has 32 bit cpu...
I know it's really an old notebook, but I use it just at home, I would like to use it as long as its hardware works, and it's supported by some good OS.

anyway, qiana is not that far away, and today I just found a post on proxmox forums that states that mint 16 already has a working version, so... time could be the best solution :)

Thanks, anyway!
