Mpd creates database, but won't play

Postby mattfitz » Sun Sep 14, 2008 2:45 am

I previously installed mpd + mpc with ease and was having as great time with it, but for various reasons I had to reinstall mint. The second time around, however, I cannot seem to get mpd to work. It installs fine: i get it off of aptitude, make a mpdconf in my home directory, and then make an .mpd folder full of the various other config files, which as I recall had it working last time. I can mpd --create-db just fine; it runs through all of the files in my music directory as it should. however, when I try to get mpc to list them, nothing shows. Ncmpc has nothing to browse through. Numerous restarts and rechecking of config files later the problem persists, and I am baffled. I really don't want to give up on mpd, does anyone have any idea why it won't work?

My mpdconf reads as follows (at least the bit that I edited)

# An example configuration file for MPD
# See the mpd.conf man page for a more detailed description of each parameter.

######################## REQUIRED PATHS ########################
# You can put symlinks in here, if you like. Make sure that
# the user that mpd runs as (see the 'user' config parameter)
# can read the files in this directory.
music_directory "~/Music"
playlist_directory "~/.mpd/playlists"
db_file "~/.mpd/mpd.db"
log_file "~/.mpd/mpd.log"
error_file "~/.mpd/mpd.error"

pid_file "~/.mpd/pid"
################################################################

######################## OPTIONAL PATHS ########################
#
# If specified, MPD will save its current state (playlist,
# current song, playing/paused, etc.) at exit. This will be
# used to restore the session the next time it is run.
#
state_file "~/.mpd/state"
#
################################################################

######################## DAEMON OPTIONS ########################
#
# If started as root, MPD will drop root privileges and run as
# this user instead. Otherwise, MPD will run as the user it was
# started by. If left unspecified, MPD will not drop root
# privileges at all (not recommended).
#
user "matt"
#
# The address and port to listen on.
#
bind_to_address "localhost"
#port "6600"
#
# Controls the amount of information that is logged. Can be
# "default", "secure", or "verbose".
#
#log_level "default"

For other with the same problem, I believe i managed to fix this simply by commenting out the pid file, that is, in the mpdconf file, placing an # before "pid_file "/var/run/mpd/pid"".
