[Solved] Wine not compatible with nvidia-304 driver in Qiana

Post by RytronII » Sun Jun 08, 2014 5:59 am

Hi.

I installed the recommended nvidia-403 driver [bottom img]. When I went to Synaptic to install PlayOnLinux, I get this warning [top img].

How can this conflict be resolved? Will updates from the Mint Update Manager automatically solve this soon?

Thanks.

Hello, RytronII.

Only yesterday I was hit by the currently still unresolved conflict between Wine 1.6 and Wine 1.7 on the one hand and Nvidia331 driver software on the other hand, which affects Ubuntu 14.04 and hence Linux Mint 17.
Cf. these Launchpad bug reports: They illustrate that the problem is known, that it is being worked on, but that it has not been completely solved.

As your report suggests, the same conflict applies to Nvidia 304 and Wine / Playonlinux. So what has been said above applies to your environment, too.

Warning:
The nastiest thing about the conflicting modules which currently force you to choose: either Wine and Nouveau or Nividia and no Wine, is the behaviour of Linux Mint Driver Manager:
Driver Manager will silently uninstall Wine as soon as you choose to replace Nouveau by Nvidia 331 without even asking for your consent.
Synaptic, however, does warn about the conflict and will make clear that installing Nvidia 331 means uninstalling Wine.

Kind regards,
Karl

Hi karlchen.

Could this conflict be solved by using the nvidia-173 driver?

I tried the nvidia-173 driver and all seemed fine (playonlinux + wine were not removed). However I rebooted and it continuously flickers just before the login screen. I can barely login via the blinking text login.

I installed the nvidia-304 package in Synaptic and it did not remove POL/wine. I launched Driver manager and it shows nvidia-304 installed. I launched 2 games in POL and they played fine. When exiting there was an odd but harmless glitch but if you maximise the POL client, it goes away.

Perhaps there is a bug in the Mint Driver Manager. :?:
