Synaptic again

Post by vortex59 »

Linux Mint 17 (MATE 64 bit):
- After the last update synaptic shows the upgradable packages put no entry in dropdown menu to mark them! On the other hand if I try to upgrade with Update Manager nothing happens except that the active windows (of Update manager) close instantly. So the only method remains line comand wich works. Any idea?

To turn the cryptic link into clear text:
monsta wrote:Yesterday Clem removed the ability to upgrade packages from Synaptic:
You may find the resulting modified Synaptic software packages here: Qiana - Upstream. Search for "synaptic" in this section. You will find: synaptic 0.81.2-2.
I wonder a bit whether silently crippling Synaptic instead of resolving the found misbehaviour was the only solution? Or was it it just a quick workaround?

Anyway, taking away the ability to select anything for upgrade in Synaptic explains why vortex59 experiences this:
vortex59 wrote:After the last update synaptic shows the upgradable packages put no entry in dropdown menu to mark them!
Yet, is it related to the next phenomenon as well?

I think the default procedure in such cases might still help reveal the root cause. Please, open aterminal window. Execute these commands and post the complete screen output here:

Code: Select all

inxi -r
sudo apt-get update
Code tags around the screen output would be nice, because they make reading easier.

Aha. I wish I had read about this. I ended up screwing my whole Cinnamon desktop trying to fix Synaptic. I reinstalled and decided to go along with the program, even though I had no clue there was one, and haven't touched Synaptic once. So my Cinnamon is back to perfect, but I kind of miss dear old Synaptic.

Re: Synaptic again

Hi, vortex59.

"inxi -r" and "sudo apt-get update" look good. - Hm. Seems as if for a short period of time a mintupdate version may have been distributed, which may cause problems, because there is yet another mintupdate update available by now. - At least someone fixed his minupdate problems by running the update from the commandline once in order to get the latest mintupdate 4.6.6. [1]

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
Perhaps doing so once will fix you mintupdate problem, too.

Cheers,
Karl

- Well after the last update (command line) nothing happened with mintupdate (that means you should manual refresh, but when you try to install the window close with the mark blue for upgrade). Today I looked into the main menu and i saw that mint apdate is started by default as simple user (not root). I corrected this (change the command in "gksu mintupdate") and "voila": the mintupdate works as it has to do (automatic refresh un real upgrade).
- Now, should I put RESOLVED for the topic (is not quite the initial topic).

all the best,

Mihai

Re: Synaptic again

Hello, Mihai.

Good question whether this thread can be considered "[solved]".

Synaptic
The reported Synaptic problem has not been solved at all. All which has been achieved is getting the explanation why Synaptic 0.81.2-x behaves like it does.
Synaptic 0.81.2-x works as re-designed.

mintUpdate
As the mintUpdate behaviour problem on Mint 17 is unrelated to the Synaptic problem, I will split this thread thus creating a new thread about the automatic startup user process mintUpdate in the systray which no longer queries the software repositories without explicit user intervention.
New thread: Mint 17 startup process mintUpdate does not query repositories

Kind regards,
Karl
