Empathy and online accounts

Post by blum » Tue Jun 17, 2014 4:32 am

I am running Linux Mint 17:
I would like to use Empathy for chat. So I installed it. I the tried to add an account: I get a "What kind of account do you have?" drop down with NO choices.
So I tried installing google-online-accounts. That did not help, and Online Accounts does not show up in my system settings.

What am I doing wrong? What steps do I need to take to use Empathy? I cnat find a guide or FAQ :/

Best regards
Troels Blum

After more research (which I really don't have time for):

This problem dates from 2012, was apparently fixed in 2013 (at least for Ubunty) and has apparently resurfaced in LM17.

Temp fix suggested at that time: Run "empathy-accounts" from CLI permits adding accounts.
but doing that in LM17 give the same dead window that empathy gives directly

https://bugs.launchpad.net/evolution/+bug/1049028

finally reports "This bug was fixed in the package evolution-data-server - 3.6.0-0ubuntu3"

...... but has clearly reappeared.

Also note:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1067901

Also discussed in:
Bug #1034331
Bug #1047255
Bug #1047824
Bug #1049513
Bug #1059114

These seem like pertinent comments.

"Empathy expects 'gnome-control-center-signon' to be installed. Prob is
that this is the config tool for Ubuntu-Online-Accounts not
Gnome-Online-Accounts which are different."

"The problem is that gnome-control-center-signon uses one of these "OnlyShowIn" lines:
OnlyShowIn=GNOME;Unity;
So if you happen to be using, say, Lubuntu, you won't be able to configure empathy
accounts unless you know how to launch it from the command line."

"Known Issue in: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/Rel ... own_Issues"
which says:
"Evolution doesn't add Gmail accounts. On the final page of the setup wizard,
uncheck the boxes to add Contacts & Calendar sync to work around this issue.
Fix is now available in quantal-updates. (1049028) "

1. by default, there's no /usr/share/applications/gnome-online-accounts-panel.desktop in Mint,
so if you don't have that file: "apt reinstall gnome-control-center" and check that it's there.
2. sudo nano /usr/share/applications/gnome-online-accounts-panel.desktop
and remove any occurence of "NoDisplay=true". If there's no occurences of it, then that's fine
3. create a file /etc/linuxmint/adjustments/gnome-online-accounts.preserve
with the line /usr/share/applications/gnome-online-accounts-panel.desktop in it.

but this is reported to fail on boot.

This, posted on the same page, claims to be a permanent fix.

apt reinstall gnome-control-center-signon
apt-get install gnome-control-center-signon
sudo nano /usr/share/applications/gnome-credentials-panel.desktop
change "OnlyShowIn=GNOME;Unity;" to "OnlyShowIn=GNOME;Unity;Cinnamon;MATE;"
Create a file /etc/linuxmint/adjustments/gnome-credentials.preserve
with the line /usr/share/applications/gnome-credentials-panel.desktop in it.

attempthing this fix today....

apt-get install gnome-control-center

gives: "Package gnome-control-center-signon is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted,or is only available from another source.
However the following packages replace it:
unity-control-center-signon:i386 unity-control-center-signon

Examining /usr/share/applications shows nothing like gnome-credentials-panel.desktop or
gnome-online-accounts-panel.desktop

Continuing to research.

Did you ever find a solution for this? Trying to use empathy on cinnamon but the drop down tab on empathy accounts add is greyed out. Annoying!
