Looking for webcam app.

Postby gitemstevedave » Fri Oct 03, 2008 3:39 pm

Hello all,

I recently got turned onto LinuxMint from an article on Lifehacker. I have a old PC I attached to my TV to use as a "media center". I have been using Windows XP on it, and recently installed LinuxMint. There has only been one "big" problem. I run a few webcams at my house (can be seen here http://mysite.verizon.net/vze1kif0 ). The cam on the far right is my living room cam, which is hooked up to the XP box. I can not seem to find an application that will take a shot at a set interval with my cam (a MS VX-5000), and upload it to my website. If anyone can help me with an app for LinuxMint, I could dump XP all together. I thank anyone in advance.

You're in luck, because I've been scouring the web recently for an app for my webcam!

I found ZoneMinder amongst my search, and I think this is what you're looking for. It requires MySQL and Apache I believe, but it was created so that you could whip together a cheap home security system with webcams. You can monitor the cams from any web browser on any computer, and from the looks of it, you can pan and zoom the cams as you wish (if they have this ability). I think you might need drivers installed for your cameras, and from the search I did, it appears your MS-VX5000 may not be supported in Linux yet, but you can give this one a shot:

You can find other webcam drivers here:

Good luck!
