XBMC and automount other drives? [Solved]

One pc I have I intend to use mostly as a media center. It has Mint 17 Mate edition 64 bits on it but I've set it to boot to XBMC. My music and films are on a second drive which is not being mounted. I wondered if, when booting to XBMC, the Mate processes are bypassed to any extent. I know this other drive doesn't mount in Mate either till I click on it in the file manager but it is at least visible where in XBMC's file manager it's not.

If you haven't used XBMC it's a media center application, very pro-looking and which has a separate entry in the display manager's menu just like if you had added Openbox or some other desktop environment.

For some reason Mint installed to a drive it calls /dev/sdb and the other drive is /dev/sda though that was unplugged at the time of installation. I don't mind that though. So, is there some tweak I can make so that the other drive automounts for XBMC. Otherwise I'll have to reinstall everything on the same drive.

Thanks.

Sounds like you'll need to edit your fstab. As the UUID of a drive does not change, it is more reliable than using dev/sda dev/sdb etc.

sudo blkid to get the UUID of the drive you want to mount

create a directory in /media/name of your computer/. Give it a meaningful name eg: music-videos

sudo pluma /etc/fstab and add the line

UUID=your UUID /mount/name-of-your computer/music-videos the-drive-file-system defaults 0 0

example:
UUID=cb464a75-53d6-4793-96fd-5f1a83197e31 /media/mint/data-0 ext4 defaults 0 0

UUID=cb... is the UUID of the drive I want to automount.
/media/mint/data-0 is the mount point of the drive
ext4 is the filesystem of this drive.
defaults are part of fstab options.
0 0 is used by fsck to determine boot checking order.

Good info here: http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man5/fstab.5.html

Beautiful, that worked out fine, drive automounting perfectly in Mate and XBMC.

Thanks.

(I will add here in case someone else uses this info that I had to redo the video and music sources in XBMC as the old file path was then incorrect, but this only needs doing once.)
