Way to turn off mate-panel?
I'm using Cairo Dock, which works great. However, mate-panel seems to require at least one panel being active. Is there a way to turn it off? It's not listed in the startup programs (probably it's part of the generic package). Can I uninstall it with no consequences, as it does have dependencies?

Have a look at this post:

Since MATE is a fork from gnome2 you can try change gnome-panel to mate-panel. It might be the same as unistalling it via apt-get.

Just remembered of something else ...
Have you tried switching desktop environment to Cairo-Dock during login screen? That is a DE using purely Cairo-Dock. That way you don't need to tweak MATE and can easily switch back to it using your login manager.
Cheers !
