"mintupdate" -> "no main manifest attribute in /usr/bin/env"

Post by texom512 » Mon Nov 10, 2014 3:26 pm

Hello,

When I try to open Mint Update with this command:

Code: Select all

mintupdate
I get this error message:

Code: Select all

no main manifest attribute in /usr/bin/env
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello, texom512.

When you type "mintupdate" in your terminal window is the posted statement "no main manifest attribute in /usr/bin/env" the only text which is displayed?
Actually I only know this complaint will be displayed if one tries to launch a .jar file like this: java -jar name_of_jar_file.jar, but the .jar file does not have a manifest.
But /usr/bin/env is no .jar file at all. So I am confused how mintupdate generates an error message which I only know as a Java error message. :?
What happens if you execute /usr/bin/env alone? (It should display your enivironment variables.)

Could you please post the complete screen outout of the following commands:
  • Exact Mint version

    Code: Select all

    inxi -Sx
  • List of sources list files and their content

    Code: Select all

    inxi -r
  • Success or failure of apt-get

    Code: Select all

    sudo apt-get update
  • Information on mintupdate:

    Code: Select all

    file /usr/bin/mintupdate
  • Content of mintupdate, it should be a short script:

    Code: Select all

    cat /usr/bin/mintupdate
Have you installed a non-standard python version perhaps and made this python version your default python version? In this case mintupdate would try to execute its python scripts with the help of an inappropriate python version.

Kind reagrds,
Karl

Hello, texom512.

The commands which you executed for your previous post, do not reveal any obvious fault.
Yet, I spot a PPA pygame.

Code: Select all

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/thopiekar/pygame/ubuntu trusty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/thopiekar/pygame/ubuntu trusty main
As far as I can tell this is a game written in Python.
This brings me back to the question which Python version you have got on your machine.

Code: Select all

python --version
Also I would be interested in learning what the command

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/env
outputs. It should simply display all environment variables which are valid inside your terminal session. But does it really do so?

Cheers,
Karl

Hey!

I have several version of python on my computer:
-python --version:

Code: Select all

Python 2.7.6
-python2:

Code: Select all

Python 2.7.6
-python2.7:

Code: Select all

Python 2.7.6
-but if I type "python2.7.6 --version":

Code: Select all

python2.7.6 : commande introuvable
-python3 --version:

Code: Select all

Python 3.4.0
-python3.4 --version:

Code: Select all

Python 3.4.0
-but if I type "python3.4.0 --version":

Code: Select all

python3.4.0 : commande introuvable
-python3.3 --version:

Code: Select all

Python 3.3.6
"As far as I can tell this is a game written in Python"
Pygame isn't a game, it's a python library for programming ;)

-/usr/bin/env:

Code: Select all

aucun attribut manifest principal dans /usr/bin/env
Thanks very much for your help!

I bet it is something obvious, but it slips our attention.

Code: Select all

$ file /usr/bin/env
/usr/bin/env: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.24, BuildID[sha1]=0xe45f351a0d64f8dea5f53c445ffd27432337981e, stripped
/usr/bin/env is an executable file.

And when executed without arguments simply outputs all environment variables:

Code: Select all

$ /usr/bin/env
SSH_AGENT_PID=1959
TERM=xterm
SHELL=/bin/bash
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games
DESKTOP_SESSION=default
DISPLAY=:0.0
_=/usr/bin/env
(In order to keep it short I have removed most lines, nothing secret by the way. But definitely no complaint as you see it)

Hello, texom512.

You could check whether your file /usr/bin/env is an ELF executable file, too.

Code: Select all

file /usr/bin/env
By the way, I am pretty sure to have come about the same problem before. Yet, try as I might, so far I have not been able to retrieve any corresponding thread, neither in the Linux Mint forum, nor in the Ubuntu forum. But I will not give up.

Apart from not giving up the search ..., I am convinced by now that the problem is somehow caused by the different Python installations on your system. Either something is misconfigured, making Python 2.7 try to use some Python 3.4 parts, or something similar. The "no main manifest attribute" is a Python related error message.
I.e. more likely than not /usr/bin/env is innocent. It will be a line in a script like "#!/usr/bin/env python" which generates the error. "env" only loads the environment and tries to launch python with loaded environment, but python causes the "no main manifest attribute" error message.

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/env python
should generate the error message, too.

Karl

Hello, texom512.
file /usr/bin/env:

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/env: Java Jar file data (zip)
This is the point where things start going wrong. "env" should be a normal ELF executable file (programme file), not a Java container, not a Java .jar file. (.jar files are just .zip files with a particular content).

/usr/bin/env is part of the software package named coreutils. I wonder
(a) which coreutils will be found on your machine
(b) whether re-installing coreutils will solve the problem
(c) how installing Java might have overwritten /usr/bin/env with something totally different?

Ad (a)

Code: Select all

dpkg --list coreutils
Ad (b)

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --reinstall coreutils
Ad (c)
No real idea. Postponed for the moment. :wink:

Cheers,
Karl

Hello karichen!

It's OK, It works :D !
After the (a), I get:

Code: Select all

Souhait=inconnU/Installé/suppRimé/Purgé/H=à garder
| État=Non/Installé/fichier-Config/dépaqUeté/échec-conFig/H=semi-installé/W=attend-traitement-déclenchements
|/ Err?=(aucune)/besoin Réinstallation (État,Err: majuscule=mauvais)
||/ Nom                                         Version                    Architecture               Description
+++-===========================================-==========================-==========================-============================================================================================
ii coreutils 8.21-1ubuntu5 i386 GNU core utilities
But sorry, I forgot to verify if it worked after.

Now (after the (b), when I type "mintupdate", I get:

Code: Select all

(mintUpdate.py:6104): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.

(mintUpdate.py:6104): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.

(mintUpdate.py:6104): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.

(mintUpdate.py:6104): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.
And Mintupdate works:

Do you think it's OK?

Hello, texom512.

Here on Mint 13, launching mitupdate in a terminal will not display any warnings. Yet, Mint 13 is different from Mint 17. And Mint 13 has got an older mintupdate version. So I would have to launch mintupdate on my Mint 17.1 in order to tell whether the 4 warnings are hints that something is wrong.
The screenshot that you posted seems to confirm that re-installing the coreutils package fixed the root cause.
The fact that mintupdate offers exactly 1 update, mintupdate itself, is by design:
Whenever mintupdate finds an update for mintupdate, it wants to update itself first. Only afterwards it will offer all the other 216 updates which "sudo apt-get update" detected (cf. your own screenshot).
So unless you come across other symptoms which suggest there are more faults which require attention I think the reported problem has been solved.

Cheers,
Karl

P.S.:
Your terminal will not return to the command prompt as long as mintupdate is loaded into RAM. The terminal is waiting for mintupdate to terminate before it will return control back to the commandline.
You might terminate mintupdate, right-click on the shield and select "Quit", and then re-launch it from the menu (sub-menu "Administration"). Or your re-launch it in the terminal like this:

Code: Select all

mintupdate &
The "&" will detach the programme mintupdate from the terminal and run it in the background.

Hello, texom512.

Sorry, I gad not posted the screen output of mintupdate on Mint 17.1, run from a terminal window. Here it is:

Code: Select all

$ inxi -S; mintupdate &
System: Host: unimatrix0 Kernel: 3.13.0-45-generic i686 (32 bit) Desktop: Xfce 4.11.8 Distro: Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca
[1] 6422
karl@unimatrix0 ~ $
(mintUpdate.py:6424): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.

(mintUpdate.py:6424): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.

(mintUpdate.py:6424): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.

(mintUpdate.py:6424): libglade-WARNING **: unknown attribute `swapped' for <signal>.
Here mintupdate functions properly although it displays these 4 warnings. Seems as if they could be neglected.

Cheers,
Karl
